St. John's Mission Statement

St. John's is a Christian community that intentionally gathers
to experience God's love through Episcopal worship, education,
fellowship, and ministry to the wider community.
A Prayer for Peace Among the Nations (BCP 816)

Let us pray in this time of conflict for the countries of Russia and the Ukraine,

Almighty God our heavenly Father, guide the nations of the world
into the way of justice and truth, and establish among them
that peace which is the fruit of righteousness,
that they may become the kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Amen.
WORSHIP
Sunday of the Passion: Palm Sunday
Sunday, April 10, 2022
9:00 am

Please join us for the Liturgy of the Palms beginning in Nale Hall
and processing into the church, followed by the celebration of the Eucharist
with a reading of The Passion According to Luke.

Come, pray, sing, receive Holy Communion,
and join us for fellowship following our liturgy.

Masks are not required.
However, if you are unvaccinated or immunocompromised,
you may wish to wear a mask.

A word about worship - our worship service begins with the lighting of the altar candles
into the prelude and ends after the postlude with the extinguishing of the candles.
A sense of prayerful reflection is appropriate to be maintained.

Collect for the Sunday of the Passion: Palm Sunday

Almighty and everliving God, in your tender love for the human race
you sent your Son our Savior Jesus Christ to take upon him our nature,
and to suffer death upon the cross, giving us the example of his great humility: Mercifully grant that we may walk in the way of his suffering,
and also share in his resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Reflection on Luke 19: 28-40

There are two ways to read this passage. 1) Jesus, as the Son of God, can predict the future and that’s what he’s doing here, describing what he has foreseen for his disciples. 2) Jesus, as the Son of God, loves humanity enough to embrace his destiny and so has made plans ahead of time for his entrance into Jerusalem, even though he expects that this entrance will lead to his death.

Surprise, surprise, I favor the second option. Not, particularly, because I have concerns about what Jesus knows or doesn’t know about the future. He’s been predicting his death in Jerusalem throughout his long trek there with his disciples. Rather, I believe that Jesus’ carefully made plans reflect his commitment to go to the city that will reject and crucify him because of his great love for that city and, indeed, all the world.

It was William Barclay, I believe, the Scottish New Testament scholar committed to making the Bible accessible to everyday readers, who once commented that there are two kinds of courage. There is the kind of courage the prompts someone to throw him or herself in the way of an oncoming car to push a child to safety. It is the kind of bravery that is instinctual, habitual, and is revealed in the moment of crisis. And there is also the kind of courage that sees danger coming a long way off, that has plenty of time to choose an alternative path, yet chooses to stay the course, to remain faithful, to endure the mounting fear in order to do one’s duty.

It is this second kind of courage we see in Jesus. He knows what lies ahead of him. He has seen it coming for most of his life. He has plenty of opportunity to flee to the path of safety. Yet he does not. He stays the course, endures the fear, makes plans to embrace it in love and wrestle it to the death.

By his stripes, Isaiah said, we were healed. And by his courage, I would add, we are set free from fear.

Prayer: Dear God, we give you thanks for the love and courage of your Son, and we ask that, seeing his example, we also might find the courage to endure the fears and challenges of our day for the sake of all your children you love so much. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

HOLY WEEK AND EASTER
The Heart of the Christian Year

Holy Week begins on the Sunday of the Passion: Palm Sunday, as Jesus enters Jerusalem and is welcomed as king. The week progresses to the Last Supper when Jesus washes the feet of his disciples and his betrayal and arrest on Thursday evening; his trial and crucifixion on Friday; and his conquering death and resurrection on Easter Eve/Easter Sunday. These services provide a liturgical experience of the last days of Jesus' earthly life.
Holy Week culminates with the Paschal Triduum (sacred three days): starting the evening
of Maundy Thursday, through the evenings of Good Friday and Holy Saturday (with the Great Vigil of Easter,) and ending the evening of Easter; all celebrating the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. The Paschal Triduum is experienced as one liturgy: having remembered the institution of the Holy Eucharist at the Last Supper, we traditionally wait and pray (vigil) at the altar of repose on Maundy Thursday; then we continue with the reading of the Passion along with the veneration and prayer (vigil) at the cross of Christ on Good Friday; leading us to the Easter Vigil where we gather and pray (vigil) around the new fire to hear the stories of salvation after which we celebrate the resurrection of Christ in the Holy Eucharist; a celebration that continues into Easter day.

"Stay with me, keep watch with me.  Watch and pray."

Prize Updates
Among the items collected so far:

  • Mark Higginbotham was a stringer of beads, and Tom Brzeczek has generously donated some of Mark's work as prizes in the Opportunity Drawings. One prize will be nine beautiful bracelets for you to keep or give as gifts. An Anglican rosary, suitable for either men or women, is sure to be one of the most-highly sought after. Some of the necklaces are Hawaiian style, owned, although not made, by Mark, and they have been paired with a beautiful piece of Batik fabric from Bali.

  • Florence Cooper's Crown Staffordshire bone china teacup, saucer, and dessert plate will go to the lucky winner along with two cans of Lyle's Golden Syrup.

  • A Pandora bracelet comes with eight charms and lots of room to add more.

Diane Gustafson is looking for a couple of people to help assemble and wrap the prizes in baskets in the first week of May. Contact her at 619 253-7298 or diangus15@aol.com if you can give a couple of hours. The prizes will be displayed on May 8 in the Narthex, and we'll begin to sell Opportunity Drawing tickets that day.

Beware of Scam Emails & Phishing Attempts

If you receive a suspicious email from an address that seems to be Rev. Roger or another parishioner asking for a favor, it may be a phishing attempt. Scam emails mimic addresses we are familiar with and are very often full of grammatical errors.

Rev. Roger will never email you asking for funds or financial support by way of gift cards. If you receive an email that seems suspicious, do not open it or respond to it. Delete it immediately.
Phishing is a cyber attack that uses disguised email as a weapon. The goal is to trick the email recipient into believing that the message is something they want or need - a request from their bank, for instance, or a note from someone in their company - and to click a link or download an attachment.
