Capital City Kiwanians serving with SLPs
Supporting Service Leadership Programs (SLPs) at local schools provide service opportunities for the Lincoln Capital City Kiwanis Club throughout the school year.  In just the past few months, Capital City members have helped with several SLP club projects.

Capital City Kiwanis members and the East High Key Club helped stock a pantry at their school with over 100 clothing items, around 400 personal care items and 20 cans of food. This pantry is not community supplied so it has to rely on individual donations from people and organizations that help the school.   The support for this pantry will be an ongoing project for our club.
Due to the pandemic, the Pyrtle K-Kids Club was unable to raise funds to purchase food and gifts for holiday baskets they normally prepare and donate to the families at their school who qualify for assistance. This year, Capital City members donated or collected $580 to be able to continue this project for them. To show their appreciation, the K-Kids made Thank You cards for the Capital City members.

Capital City also supports a Builders Club at Lux Middle School, which was the recipient of a National Blue Ribbon Award recently. The club took this opportunity to present the school's principal with a check for $150 in recognition of the school winning this award. The funds were designated to purchase something that would benefit all students.
The Pyrtle K-Kids and the Lux Builders clubs participated in a Valentines for Seniors Project that was organized by the East High Key Club. They collectively handmade around 120 valentines that were delivered to the residents of a local senior facility. Capital City Kiwanis Advisors helped with the communication between the schools and the collection of the finished valentines so the East High Key Club members could deliver them.

Nevada donates grant to Wings of Refuge
The Nevada Kiwanis Club received a $500 grant for its efforts to increase membership through the Nebraska-Iowa District’s “Membership Up in 2021” contest last year. The club used the grant as part of a service project with Wings of Refuge.

Wings of Refuge is an organization that provides emotional support, housing, job training and living essentials to victims of sex trafficking.

The Nevada club first distributed a “wish list” of items needed at the Ames, Iowa Wings of Refuge house to its members. They collected three large boxes of these items during January and February. Brandy Young, Wings of Refuge development director, spoke during a club meeting on Feb. 22. Brandy’s talk was informative, enlightening and frankly, quite frightening. Members had many questions concerning the organization, its operations, how the club could help and success stories.

Club President Ann Malven presented Brandy and for Wings of Refuge a check for the $500 from the Membership UP Grant, plus additional funds collected from the membership. They has since received thank you notes from Brandy and the Wings of Refuge Donations Coordinator Kelly. They hope to have future opportunities to partner with Kiwanians.

Lincoln Center helps out YMCA programs
Lincoln Center Kiwanis has put to good use some recently received grant dollars.

The club was one of the winning recipients of the Nebraska-Iowa District’s “Membership Up in 2021” contest and received a $1,000 grant for service projects. The Lincoln Center Kiwanis Foundation multiplied the good that those dollars could do by providing matching dollars to total $4,000.
Because of the combined funding, more children have an opportunity for quality childcare at a reduced cost at the YMCA. There is one free CLC (Community Learning Center) program run by the Y at Elliott Elementary School.

The Y has additional CLC’s with a fee at Pershing, Lefler and Mickle schools. The Y also offers childcare and supervised activities at Pyrtle, Zieman and Kahoa Elementary schools.

Another program is the after-school garden club. Students learn about nature and pollinator plants while working in the school gardens.
Kearney Golden K tours new hotel
On March 2, Paul Younes, owner of Younes Hospitality, hosted the Golden K Kiwanis at the Crowne Plaza hotel and convention center. The new facility opened on Feb. 1. He spoke about the features of the Crowne Plaza and gave members a tour.
