Dear Community . . .
Dear North Penn Community,

Today, I announced my plans to retire as Superintendent of this great school district at the end of my contract on June 30, 2022. Choosing the moment to announce was difficult for me, and Pennsylvania School Code impacted the decision by requiring a certain time frame. But here we are on the 12th anniversary of my appointment as Superintendent announcing to the North Penn community that my incredible time here is coming to an end.

Ultimately, it was important to me to make my plans known now so that our school community and its elected school board has the appropriate amount of time to plan its next steps for naming its next superintendent. But more than four months remain until my retirement and I plan to serve you, as always, with the greatest of intentions and expertise until my final day. For this you can be sure.

It’s difficult to leave a profession you have been devoted to for more than 40 years, and it is especially challenging to leave North Penn coworkers, students and community members. One of my favorite parts of being superintendent has been my ability to meet with all of these groups often, formally and informally, to learn about their needs and expectations so that I could better lead NPSD.

I am not one to talk about personal accomplishments, because for me, all of NPSD’s achievements during my time as superintendent are due to the collaboration of everyone and our collective goal to make NPSD the excellent organization that it is. What I will note is that being your superintendent has been an honor.

I invite everyone to watch a video message of my retirement announcement which I made as part of North Penn Right Now, a monthly program produced and broadcast live on North Penn Television. You can watch the video message here.

Sincerely,
Curtis R. Dietrich, Ed.D.
Superintendent

North Penn Approves Design Stage For In-House Employee and Family Health Clinic
The North Penn School Board has approved a design contract to begin work on the in-house health clinic. The clinic is intended for North Penn School District employees and their family members. It is estimated to cost $800,000 for construction, $400,000 of which is expected to be returned by grants and another $300,000 potentially covered by the district health care fund. The clinic is intended to reduce health care costs for the district, while also providing a local, convenient option for employees and their families to receive health services. The clinic will be located next to Penndale Middle School (Correction: a previous email incorrectly stated this clinic would be located on the former WNPV radio property). The clinic will be run by Everside Health and staffed by two full- time employees.
NPHS Students Take the Polar Plunge
NPSD Receives Meritorious Budget Award
Students from the Special Olympics Club and North Penn High School took a polar plunge at Citizens Bank Park to raise money for Special Olympics and Unified Sports. The club raised nearly $9000 dollars by taking the cold jump into the pool.
For the seventh year in a row, North Penn has received the Meritorious Budget Award from the Association of School Business Officials (ASBO). In the 2020-2021 school year, NPSD was one of only 10 districts in Pennsylvania to receive the award. The award is given to districts who demonstrate fiscal best practices and clear communication to the community.

Introducing Universal Design for Learning
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework based on scientific insights into how people learn and are designed to improve and optimize teaching and learning for all students.

Universal Design for Learning emerged from the architectural concept of universal design. These principles established a framework for developing design standards that permit the greatest degree of access and usability for the widest range of individuals.

The principles below shape the lesson planning process for educators to ensure that all students can not only access material, but are also able to demonstrate their understanding in a variety of meaningful ways.

North Penn has implemented UDL in several ways throughout our classrooms. Teachers may offer student choice in assignments, flexible work spaces, and text options in digital and audio format. These are just a few of many examples of how UDL may work inside of a classroom space.
UDL Key Principles
Engagement
For purposeful, motivated learners, stimulate interest and motivation for learning.
Representation
For resourceful, knowledgeable learners, present information and content in different ways.
Action & Expression
For strategic, goal-directed learners, differentiate the ways that students can express what they know.
