The feast of the Annunciation is celebrated on March 25. The Annunciation interrupts the fasting and penance of Lent to celebrate Jesus’ coming. This feast commemorates the announcement by the angel Gabriel to Mary that she would be the mother of God’s Son, Jesus. This feast is nine months before Christmas.
“Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you.” Read Luke 1:26-38. The Gospels do not mention a date for Jesus’ birth nor for the Annunciation. The early Church [3rd or 4th century] studied oral and written traditions, and after much debate, fixed March 25 for the date of the Annunciation. The date for Christmas was set after establishing the date for the Annunciation.
It was believed by many ancient Christians that a person died on the same date that they were conceived. In antiquity, March 25 was thought to be the actual date of Jesus’ death. Hence its selection for the Annunciation.

An Important Message from the Altar Guild
|
|
Normally, we do not have flowers on the altar during Lent. However, on the 4th Sunday in Lent, known as Refreshment Sunday, Rose Sunday, or Laetare Sunday, flowers are allowed. This year, Refreshment Sunday will be on Sunday, March 27. It is a day when the austerity and fasting of Lent is relaxed. The Altar Guild will accept donations to cover the cost of flowers for this day.

~ St. John's Adopts A Community ~
Donations Needed for the DeLuz Farmworkers
|
|
A Message from Diana F. to all DeLuz Farmworker Donors:
A modest March collection but quality donations. Folks are getting the picture about specific clothing requests. St. John's Episcopal Church, Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Temecula & Company and Escondido Dems plus our regular Fallbrook, Rainbow donors showed up.
Thanks for your help. (Published on the Farmworkers Facebook page)
|
|
ATTENTION: They have plenty of clothing, but the only clothing they DO need right now are men's jeans / long-sleeved work shirts / hats.
We are accepting donations continually throughout the year for the DeLuz Farmworkers. This community works hard to help put fresh vegetables and fruits on our tables, receiving very little in return. Please consider adding a few items to your shopping cart each week to help these very deserving people. Drop-off your unwrapped items in the office (Tuesdays/Thursdays 9AM – Noon and 1pm – 4pm, or in Duddington Hall on Sundays. Click on the link below for a downloadable list of items needed throughout the year or the special "wish list." Please contact Kim for more information.

UPDATED Safety Protocols for
In-Person Worship at St. John's
|
|
We've received updated guidance from the Bishop regarding updated COVID safety protocols:
Our Public Health Task Force met in February to consider our diocesan Covid requirements as the Omicron numbers are improving. Although California is still encouraging masking, masks are no longer required by the state for indoor worship. Accordingly, beginning this week, we will allow congregations to make the decisions that are appropriate for their local contexts, with the following notes:
- Masks are still required for unvaccinated people. Although we do not ask churches to check vaccination status, the state of California asks each unvaccinated person to take responsibility for protecting their neighbors and wear a high-quality N95 or similar mask.
- People who have other high-risk factors should also wear a mask

Regular Office Hours are 9am – 4pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

|
Sunday, March 27th ~ we celebrate the third Sunday in Lent. It is part of year C in the Lectionary. The color of the vestments and altar accessories is green for Epiphany season.
We are celebrating the Eucharist INSIDE, in person, and masks are only required for those who are unvaccinated. We are able to sing now, so most of the service music has been restored.
We have jettisoned the use of "Costco Cups" in favor of putting the host directly in the hands of communicants. The Presider will be masked when offering communion, but those receiving need not mask.
The "prayer teams" are back in action, offering anointing, prayers and/or laying-on-of-hands outdoors on the patio after receiving communion. They will be masked since pray-ers and prayees are in such close proximity and face to face.
We will utilize Eucharistic Prayer C during Lent (Mar. 2 – Apr. 16). The Gospel readings in Lectionary Year C are mostly from Luke, The daily office readings are in Year 1.
If you prefer to remain distanced, we have heaters for the patio, and speakers that can be used for in-person, outdoor worship.

2022 PLEDGE EFFORT
The 2022 pledge information season has concluded and we are wrangling the last dozen or so pledges. Now it is time to receive everyone's response by placing our pledge cards in the Fabric of St. John's quilt behind the altar between now and January 16. We've received 37 pledges thus far for 2022.
Some have said, "I pledge every year, just put me down for last year's amount." Although that would make it easier, we can't "assume" something like that, so each year we start from scratch asking for pledges.
Please consider responding with a pledge for 2022 after prayerful consideration. The cards for 2022 were sent out in early December. Your monetary support of St. John's will extend our ministry and help keep the lights on and the doors open for as long as God calls us to serve!
Thank you for your faithfulness!!!
