Superintendent's Notebook:
Time for Brunswick Schools to Plan Ahead
"For some, the words “strategic plan” represents a bureaucratic exercise with little practical application – a tome that ultimately collects dust. For others, strategic planning means a Herculean task, a ton of time and a committee no one wants to be on.

In reality, strategic plans provide a framework and a road map that keep long- and short-term goals top of mind. A strategic plan sets a bar against which all initiatives will be measured. In short, if something doesn’t support the mission and the strategic plan, it doesn’t happen. Strategic planning is an ongoing, integrated process in most high-performing organizations and that includes the Brunswick School Department."

BHS Quiz Bowl Team
The BHS Quiz Bowl team recently filmed their first competition for season 5 of High School Quiz Bowl Maine (QBM) on MPBN. The 16 teams in the tournament qualified based on a written trivia exam, and now they’ll compete head-to-head for a $1,000 prize. The Dragons’ latest accomplishment comes on the heels of strong finishes in two regional tournaments earlier this year. Advisor and social studies teacher Ana Wiley said she has high hopes for the QBM tournament but is just glad to see a platform for these students’ particular talents. “We don't always celebrate kids that are really good at knowing stuff. I think it's important to be supporting how academics translate to something like this. For some of them it definitely helps with confidence.” Catch Quiz Show Maine on MPBN Thursday evenings at 8:00 p.m., with rebroadcasts Friday at 2:00 p.m. and Sunday at 5:00 p.m.
Winter Carnival Boosts Spirits
BHS’s Winter Carnival was created by social studies teacher Pam Wagner to offer a day of fun and community bonding amongst students and faculty. Now in its tenth year and spearheaded by the BHS Pep Committee, it continues as a half-day when students can browse among 30 activities, from watercolors to hiking trails. “There’s a lot of planning that goes into it. There’s the coordination between what activities students want to see, where faculty want to host, and all the materials that we buy for the enjoyment of the students,” said advisor and social studies teacher Connor Lynch. This year’s carnival happened to align with the Unified Basketball game, and many students stayed after school to cheer on their fellow Dragons against the faculty. Lynch observed, “Brunswick is all about community and being there for each other, and I was glad to see all those elements merge on that Friday. It’s the true Spirit of the Dragon.”
