MONDAY MEMO
Preschoolers Tiernan and James worked with the rest of the class to make orange carrot muffins in their outdoor kitchen.
Greetings!

8th graders put on a "Half Time Show" last week in assembly to remind us that we are now officially in the second half of the school year!

Happy Monday,
Nelia
NOTES
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
You have been seeing announcements here in the Monday Memos soliciting donations for the Annual Appeal. Our school model is based on parent participation, and financial support is an important and vital part of that, but it is not the only way for families to participate in the success of our school. Every day you see parent volunteers helping around campus, and we are extremely grateful for that. There are many things volunteers do on our campus that we simply don’t have the budget or staff to do, and helping with those things is a tangible way for you to be part of and support your child(ren)’s education. To that point, we have a list of facilities needs that parents can help with. They range from cleaning and painting to more involved projects. Please reach out to Roy or Krystal if you want to pitch in.
UPDATE: DEFENDING SCHOOL CHOICE
Thank you parents Alex Donn (8th grader Phoebe) and Genevieve Faherty (7th grader Celia and 8th grader Zane) for helping to strategize and lead our community efforts.

Vermont's historic "school choice" model of education is again under attack, and we urgently need your help. If we do not take action right now, school choice could be completely eliminated, or significantly changed, during the current legislative session.

It is obvious that, if you live in a school choice town, the elimination of the school choice model would have a dramatic impact on your family. And we hope that all families will support our efforts to defend school choice -- because any changes to the school choice model will mean extremely disruptive changes to Riverside.  So if you love Riverside, please help us protect school choice today.

One important part of our efforts to protect the school choice model is a letter-writing campaign that will demonstrate how strongly our community supports school choice and Riverside.

Please help us by writing a letter explaining how much school choice and Riverside mean to you. Please keep the following in mind:
  • The more letters we write the better. Multiple, separate letters from one family would be fantastic (i.e., each parent/guardian and each child).
  • Please address the letters to Representative Terri Lynn Williams, an NEK representative who supports school choice and is on the House Committee on Education, and email them to Alex Donn so that we can deliver them as a batch.
  • Any letter will be helpful, even if all you say is that you love Riverside and you love school choice -- but the more specifics you can provide, the better.
  • Possible points to include regarding the importance of the school choice model are: the ability to send your child to the school that is right for that child because children learn differently; the investment in a school's unique mission statement, smaller class sizes; and more flexibility.
SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS NEEDED
We had two teachers out today, and all of their classes were covered by our own teachers/staff during their "free" periods.

If you know anyone who could help with subbing, even for only a few hours, please let us know. You can express a preference to be called only in advance, or for certain ages or subject areas, or certain hours of the day (even being available to cover two hours is wonderfully helpful!), or certain times of year. Anything helps! Please email Krystal if you'd be willing to join the team!
PARENT-TEACHER-STUDENT CONFERENCES
K-8 Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences are planned for this Wednesday, February 1 and PK-8 for Thursday, February 2. There will be an early dismissal at 12:30 for K-8 on Wednesday, and PK-8 on Thursday. We encourage students to join in the conversations about the successes and challenges if they are willing. Please sign up for a time slot at the appropriate link below.

Kindergarten Sign Ups - Jamie will email with additional meeting options.
6-8th Grade Sign Ups (if there are no appointments available, please email the whole teacher team to find a mutually convenient time, or consider if just meeting with the advisor would be sufficient and plan accordingly with one of them)
EXTENDED DAY PROGRAM WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY
K-8th grade Extended Day and Preschool After School Programs will run on Wednesday and Thursday after the early dismissals at 12:30. Please be sure to email Sean or McKenna directly if your child will attend and what time you plan to pick up, so that they can plan accordingly for the long afternoon.
SKIING & SNOWBOARDING FRIDAYS
The prediction at this point is for very cold temperatures on Friday, which may cause a cancellation of our usual plans. We will make that decision on Wednesday. Otherwise, Friday K-8th graders will be out on trails again this week, with the usual routines, pick up times, and locations.

Note in the calendar that we are not skiing on Feb. 17 (regular dismissal at Riverside at 3:00/3:30) or Feb. 24 (early dismissal at 12:30).
6-8 LATIN DAY
As a reminder, there are no middle school classes on Monday. We are thrilled to resume Riverside’s long tradition of attending this wonderful event at UVM. All middle school students need to be on campus ready to leave by 7:30 AM on Monday, February 6th.

Carpools: We will send out final carpool lists over the weekend to all parents. Nathan is putting the carpools together, please let him know if you are not comfortable with your child riding in the front seat. Volunteer Drivers: If you have volunteered to drive to Latin Day, you will be getting more information about that tomorrow, including draft carpool lists.

Lunch: We will be eating out, at one of four Burlington restaurants. Students should express their preference using the survey Roy emailed them before Tuesday morning. Students should bring about $20 for lunch, or check the menu of their preferred choices in advance and plan accordingly. Please help your child to understand the importance of appropriate tipping and to plan for that as well in their budgeting.

Event Schedule and Info: For full information about the day, including schedule, locations, events, etc. please see the Latin Day Packet. Many students are doing extra activities (art projects, probatio, trivia, etc..) and will be doing some preparation between now and Monday.
PAG MEETING
The next meeting of the Parent Advisory Group is scheduled for Thursday, February 9 at 5:00 pm. Dinner will be provided thanks to volunteers. If you have any suggested agenda items, please email them to Deandra and Kim.
THE LION KING (by the Publicity Elective)
6-8th grade actors, remember to bring your scripts home to practice, lines should be memorized by Monday, February 20, and don't forget to bring them back to school for rehearsals.

TOGETHER WE ARE ONE
Please consider making a gift to Riverside's annual fund, if you haven't already. It's not the size of your gift that matters, but the act of participating, which helps us leverage further grants and donations by showing off the strength of the support in our community. We hope to have more than 70% of parents participate, currently we have 39%.
