Prepare NOW for Summer Wildfire Smoke
"Above normal" fire activity is expected in Washington this summer and the Kitsap Public Health Department is urging Washingtonians to prepare now.

This years especially dry weather is setting the stage for a possible intense wildfire season according to the Washington State Department of Health, which obviously leads to the potential for smoke to enter our region.

Smoke from fires is unhealthy for everyone, and increases health risks in people of all ages. Higher risk individuals such as babies and children, adults over 65, pregnant women, and those with other heath conditions like heart and respiratory issues should take extra precautions to prevent excessive exposure.

Some step you can take include:

1. Staying indoors as much as possible when smoke is in the air, and keeping the air in your home as clean as possible:
  • Choose a space in your home — such as a living room or bedroom — where you can keep air cooler and cleaner when air quality outside is unhealthy.
  • Keep windows and doors closed. Seal gaps around doors and windows that could allow smoke to enter your home.
  • Consider purchasing an air cleaner or purifier with a HEPA filter for your home or work, or make a box fan filter.
  • Avoid indoor activities that make air quality inside your home worse, such as vacuuming or frying food.

2. Avoid vigorous outdoor activities, such as running or biking. If you have to be outside when there is smoky conditions, consider wearing a high-quality respirator such as an N95 or KN95.

3. Talk to your healthcare provider if someone in your household is at higher risk from smoke or if you are concerned about symptoms related to smoke
  • If you have a breathing condition such as asthma, make sure you have an inhaler and any medications you might need.

4. Stay informed of current air quality conditions
