FROM YOUR DIRECTOR

JEAN RENFORTH,

Executive Director

August is the month dedicated to John Montagu’s (the 4th Earl of Sandwich) famed 18th century creation, the sandwich.

Lord Sandwich, was a frequent gambler, often spending hours on end at the gambling table. A rumour in a contemporaneous travel book called Tour to London by Pierre-Jean Grosley is that he wanted something he could eat without having to leave the table, so he was provided with beef slices and cheese in between two pieces of bread. When others copied this order and made it a trend, the sandwich was born.

According to Merriam-Webster, a sandwich is defined as two pieces of bread with something (such as meat, peanut butter, etc.) between them, although that definition has been stretched over time as food makers have attempted to redefine what can be a sandwich.

For instance, a hot dog meets the technical definition of a sandwich. Enjoy your sandwich!

COMMUNITY NEWS

ROAD TRIPPIN'

This month we are on the road to North Carolina. North Carolina is the largest producer of sweet potatoes in the nation. Students at a Wilson County school petitioned the North Carolina General Assembly for the establishment of the sweet potato as the official state vegetable. Whitewater Falls in Transylvania County is the highest waterfall in the eastern United States. The World War II battleship ‘North Carolina’ is permanently berthed on the Cape Fear River at Wilmington. She was saved from the scrap heap in the 1960s by public subscription, including donations of dimes by schoolchildren.

LOOKING BACK

July 2022

Looking back in July, we had some fun events. We held a patio/balcony contest and we have some wonderful patios and balconies around the community. When driving around the community, it brings joy to see all the hard work they have done to make their apartment home their own.

Congrats to our winners:

  • 1st – Marilyn R. (Building 1)
  • 2nd – Sheryl W. (Building 4)
  • 3rd – Becky H. (Building 3)

We also had a fun Luau where residents enjoyed wonderful food, dancing, and even frozen drinks.

PROTECT YOUR SKIN WHILE IN THE SUN

The sun has many healing properties and health benefits and it’s the best way to get Vitamin D. One way to protect your skin from the harmful UV rays besides sunscreen is to eat your sunscreen (not actual sunscreen).

  • Sweet potatoes and peppers contain plenty of beta carotene and vitamin C — both of which are important antioxidants for your skin. Vitamin C is also necessary to create collagen, the structural protein that keeps your skin strong.
  • Broccoli and any cabbage family vegetable are also a good source of vitamins, minerals, and carotenoids. These are important for skin health. They also contain sulforaphane, which may help prevent skin cancer and protect your skin from sunburn
  • Eating green leafy vegetables, which contain lutein and zeaxanthin, help stop UV-induced cell proliferation to reduce sun burn. The food includes; Kale, leaf lettuce, green peas, Callard greens and spinach.
  • Fatty types of fish like salmon, which contains omega-3 fatty acids, can reduce inflammation and keep your skin moisturized. They’re also a good source of high-quality protein, vitamin E, and zinc.
