Dear AL Community,
I am proud to announce that Armour passed its International Baccalaureate Programme five-year evaluation with flying colors. The three-day virtual visit took place this week after months of preparation by our IB coordinator and Armour teachers. The review panel celebrated our exemplary opportunities for staff development and training and informed us that we are way beyond the expectations in developing our purpose as an internationally-minded world school. We were also commended for our attention to service learning in 7th grade and at the high school.
The panel noted that we made notable progress in a number of aspects of our programme, and have developed specific suggestions for how to take the next meaningful steps in developing an effective environment for developing life-long learners and global thinkers. We will continue our work with teachers and students to put these suggestions into practice to continue improving our IB program. I am also proud to point out that our middle school is among the top performing middle schools in the state of Missouri. Big thank you to our Armour teachers, leadership, and students for their amazing work. Congratulations!
Have a great weekend,
Elimane Mbengue

From the Cherry and Oak Principals
|
Dear Families,
We know that many parents have purchased smartwatches for their children. We understand the safety and reassurance this provides for kids and parents.
We also know that most parents have talked to their kids about limits and responsible use, and many have set up the watches to only be used for parent calls in emergencies. We urge you to take advantage of these parental controls.
Please understand that children do not always have the maturity to only use their smartwatches (or cellphones) at approved times and in appropriate ways. We have had students taking videos or pictures of their peers or teachers, playing games, or making phone calls during the school day.
Please familiarize yourself with our policy in the student handbook: Students may not use cell phones or other electronic devices (including smart watches) during the school day on school grounds/property (including during recess or dismissal). If found, seen or heard, the cell phone/electronic device will be confiscated, and taken to the office. The cell phone/electronic device will only be returned to a parent during the school day. Personal phones/electronic devices are to be kept out of sight and turned off during the school day. The school is not responsible for lost/stolen phones or electronic devices should students choose to bring them to school. Students are not to video or photograph anything on school property at any time.
Students will continue to be allowed to have smart watches, but like any other electronic devices, they should be turned off during the school day. If it becomes a distraction, or disrupts learning, or is used in violation of another person's privacy, it may be confiscated and disciplinary action may occur.
Thank you for your support in protecting the learning environment at school.

ALIHS Students Tour Colleges
|
In February, 15 of our eleventh grade students went on a college tour of Missouri. They spent two nights in St. Louis and had the opportunity to visit Mizzou, Washington University, St. Louis University, and Missouri S&T. The purpose of the trip was to explore a variety of colleges: public, private, urban, rural, large and small. Students had a great time touring colleges, swimming in the hotel pool, and even attending a Billikens basketball game thanks to our charter sponsor St. Louis University.

BeautifyAL Oak Spring Update
|
A lot of exciting things are happening this spring on the grounds of the Oak campus! We are excited to share that Académie Lafayette’s Oak campus was chosen as a recipient of the 2023 North American Pollinator Protection Campaign’s (NAPPC) Lepidoptera Grant awards. Funding will be used to revamp the existing pollinator garden on the southwest side of the building, thus creating intentional habitat which will benefit wildlife, students, and teachers. BeautifyAL and GreenAL will oversee the installation of additional nectar-producing native plants this spring which will provide flowers in bloom throughout the season as well as larval food to support local butterfly and moth species. Our proposed Jardin des Papillons, or Garden of Butterflies, project will also include a butterfly puddling station, educational signage, sculpture art, and resources that facilitate engagement and learning. We are fortunate to have a dedicated perennial garden to expand upon and the support from administration to beautify this space while restoring native habitat, contributing to conservation, and raising an awareness of butterflies and moths in our school and neighborhood communities.
Also, you may have noticed there is a new outdoor, paver patio under the teacher's lounge dining set. Nate King, a fellow AL parent, and landscape & lawn contractor, graciously donated his time and labor to put the new patio in, and we couldn't be more happy with the results! We are looking forward to the faculty, staff, and parents being able to utilize the space and enjoy being outside!
