Although the word radar is currently widely used as a standard word in our daily lives, it is, indeed, an acronym for “radio detection and ranging” from the 20th century. Since then, rads are used in military applications, meteorological radars for weather monitoring and atmospheric research and remote sensing radars for surface and geological imaging, have also been widely used.
An integrated circuit (IC), or chip, is a set of electronic circuits and components placed on a tiny planar silicon semiconductor substrate. The circuits and components are electrically connected to one another with the help of planar and vertical conductor elements known as interconnects. An overview of the evolution of interconnects during the past four decades is presented, highlighting technological milestones.
The introduction of new technology in the wireless communication industry increases the number of frequency bands in the communication environment. Therefore, a communication system capable of functioning over several frequency bands, known as a multiband communication system, is required. Multiband systems support technology upgrades by smoothly bridging the technology migration.
Amplifiers and filters are essential components in microwave systems. An amplifier is used to increase the signal strength, and it is usually cascaded by filters for frequency selection or harmonic rejection. Their functionalities require a precise design of the individual parts as well as the way in which they are connected. This article details a comprehensive review of integrated filter-amplifiers.
One main challenge for modern communication systems is simultaneous demand for higher data rates (performance) and lower power consumption and size (cost). One way to increase wireless data transfer capacity is to employ frequency-division duplex (FDD) wireless systems where both transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) work at the same time but in two different frequency bands with guard bands.
Medical monitoring has improved over the last four decades to include increasingly less invasive techniques. In particular, Doppler radar methods are emerging as a means for remote sensing of respiration and heart activity, which until recently was restricted to science fiction. The potential for such nonintrusive accrual of biomedical data applies to a wide range of health/life monitoring applications.
Microwaves Are Everywhere
This article is the first in a continuing series of general interest papers in the new: IEEE Journal of Microwaves, on the applications of microwaves in areas of science and technology that might not be evident to the casual observer. What better topic to start the series than an introduction to the most pervasive microwave field in the universe: the cosmic microwave background (CMB). The prediction, discovery, and importance of the CMB from a microwave engineering perspective are reviewed and discussed.
This article is the second in a continuing series of general interest papers in the new: IEEE Journal of Microwaves, on the applications of microwaves in areas of science and technology that might not be appreciated by the traditional engineer. What more appropriate application could there be than the first wide-spread commercial use of microwaves for food preparation. The development, use and evolution (or lack of) of the microwave oven is the subject of this “Microwaves are Everywhere” special interest article.
The tagging of people, animals, and all manner of things for individual identification purposes has been an obsession of humanity since the earliest days of community existence and personal property. Doing so permanently, discretely, and without the possibility of removal or alteration was the realm of science fiction and spy novels until very recently. In this, our third in our special IEEE Journal of Microwaves “Microwaves are Everywhere” series, we examine the techniques, devices, development and basic operation of the now ubiquitous RFID industry.
Microwaves are huge compared to the likes of optical wavelengths, and are generally not thought about for uses on a micron scale. Recently, the fields of AFM (atomic force microscopy) and SMM (scanning microwave microscopy) came together and spun off a handful of commercial applications and instruments. In this, our fourth tutorial article in our continuing series on the ubiquitous presence and applications of microwaves, we take a look at the origins, instruments and biological applications and goals for “nano-microwaves,” the use of microwaves at nanometer scales.

Women in Microwaves

WIM stands for “Women in Microwaves” and is the subset of Women in Engineering (WIE) working within the field of microwave engineering and typically active within the MTT society. WIM is also a subcommittee under MGA within the MTT-S AdCom.

The mission of WIM is to attract more woman graduate students and professionals to join MTT-S, and to increase the visibility of females in MTT-S throughout a variety of activities.

Learn more about how to get involved with WIE/WIM today.
