Preparing for Racing

The start of the 2022 Lake Ontario Racing Season is less than 12-weeks away…can you believe it? All race dates have all been set, Notice of Race is now posted, crews are starting to be arranged and of course, safety is top-of-mind. LOOR continues to host our Webinar Series to help prepare racers for an exciting 2022 Lake Ontario Racing Season.

All Racer Event: Sunday, March 20th 14:00-16:00

Our flag distribution and ‘post race chili’ event in December was so popular we decided to do it again. All are welcome to join us whether you are a seasoned LOOR racer or hope to join us for the first time. Dress warmly as we are planning (in case you were missing the LO300 post race meal) to serve chili and beer at PCYC’s fire pit. Please come and meet your LOOR Organising Committee and your fellow racers and find out what is happening in the upcoming season! In case you didn’t get a chance to come out for the previous event, flags and keeper plaques will be there for you to pick up.

This is a drop in event, but we would like to get an idea of how many people will be coming so we don’t run out of, um, Chili. Please RSVP to info@loor.ca

NEW THIS YEAR - LO300 Entries capped at 90

This year we are celebrating the 32nd LO300 Challenge. To ensure that YB Trackers are available for every participant, entries are capped at 90 paid entries. The precedence of an entry will be based on the date and time of the payment in full of the total applicable fee.

The first race of the season is the 75 NM Susan Hood Trophy Race, scheduled for Friday, June 03rd, 2022. Running annually since 1955 on the first weekend of June and affectionately referred to as “the coolest race on the lake”, First Warning is 19:45PM on the Friday evening, making it an overnight experience on often very cold water with racers typically back at PCYC during the afternoon of the following day.

The Lake Ontario Short Handed Racing Series (LOSHRS) also begins that weekend, with the 16 NM Course Race scheduled for Sunday, June 5th.

Event Guides:

This year LOOR has created Guides for each event to provide supplementary information over the Notice of Race (NoR) and help explain details for the new or potential participant.

We would appreciate your feedback on any errors or omissions, for suggestions for improvements for the 2023 edition by EMAIL.

Sailors for the Seas:

LOOR is making moves to follow the Sailors for the Seas Best Practices Guide towards a cleaner, greener season. Last year you may have seen the five part series in this newsletter outlining 20 points to help with hosting and participating in a cleaner regatta. This year you’ll find more details on some of the points and ways you, as participants, can help.

Eliminate Single-Use Plastics:

Plastic beverage bottles are consistently in the top five most collected items at beach clean-ups around the world, according to the International Coastal Cleanup project, so please consider using your own reusable bottle.  They can be filled at clubs including some with dedicated watering stations.

Similarly, eliminate plastic straws. International Coastal Cleanup Report notes that straws and stirrers were the seventh most collected item from beach clean-ups around the world. Plastic straws are only used for a short period of time, yet they are created from a material that is meant to last forever. Additionally, plastic straws are not recyclable. They often make their way into the water and, unfortunately, into the breathing and digestive systems of sea creatures.

Crew Bank: Need Crew or Interested in Crewing?

If you are a sailor and interested in participating in one of the Lake Ontario Offshore Races, or a skipper who needs crew, use the Crew/Boats Boards on the Yacht Scoring Registration and Official Document page.

Go to the Crew Bank page on the LOOR site.

Registering sooner is better so you can get together and see or exhibit strengths or determine any gaps in experience. LOOR strongly recommends getting to know your new crew or skipper before going offshore or overnight races.

Sail Rating / Handicap

Sail Measurement Certificate

If you’re purchasing a new sail or having a sail serviced at a sailmaker’s, it’s to your benefit to have the sailmaker measure the sails and provide you with a Sailmakers’ Sail Measurement Certificate. This will save having to measure the sail later. This especially applies to older sails as they shrink in the dimensions that are measured for handicap rating. They may even shrink enough to generate a slight change in your rating!
