REFLECTIONS on LENT
A few weeks ago Mary preached on the familiar story of the Prodigal Son. What a blessed text as we continue the journey toward Good Friday’s cross. The younger son lives through his own Good Friday and experiences a true transformation. From farm hand – feeding the pigs more food than he receives daily – to welcomed guest, honored son, he is received at his own feast full to the brim with grace and goodness abounding.
The older brother hears this grace as the father recalls that his youngest “was dead and has come to life.” What glory! What a moment to celebrate! In the midst of the Lenten journey to the cross we get a glimpse of the resurrection, a taste of the table full full full of our God’s love.
Luke provides not one, not two, but three visions of this party. “Rejoice with me” we read with this transformation from lost to found. A shepherd loses a sheep and goes out in search of this particular one.
A woman loses her coin and turns her house upside down to find that precious piece. Just as we know the stone was rolled away from the grave, we read the transformation from lost to found which fills the pages of Luke chapter 15.
How do we take the story from the page to our hearts? How do we hear “Rejoice with me” as we search through the lost and the dying parts of our own lives? Listening to the news. Hearing our doubts. Doing the hard work of caring for family. Through worry and fear, frustration and hardship, we struggle to find the invitation to live life to the fullest.
But we have an advantage in our search. We know the end of the story. Even in the middle of our Good Friday world we can hear that the sheep is found, the father welcomes his child, what was dead has come to life.
In our search for hope we can hear, “Rejoice with me.” The invitation to the party is ours.

One Great Hour of Sharing
Balmoral will be collecting One Great Hour of Sharing gifts through Easter Sunday, April 17. Envelopes are provided on the sanctuary table. Or you may put a check marked for OGHS in the offering plates.
One Great Hour
of Sharing Connects Us
What if these were the days when Jesus was living with us? What if this were the moment God chose to connect?
Where would we find Jesus? Here, in our congregation? Look around. Or in our neighborhoods?
Perhaps Jesus would be among people classified as “essential,” who might struggle to feed their own families, while ensuring food makes it to others’ tables.
Perhaps Jesus would be working in a neighborhood, mostly ignored by governments and industry, except when there are resources to be exploited or removed.
Perhaps Jesus lives in any of the places, so impoverished in a world of plenty, that help and hope seem like illusions.
Or perhaps locked away, drowned out or disregarded so far from us that we never even know our Savior’s name.
What if this is the time? What if this is the place?
Our faith proclaims that God connects in each of those places, and in each person bearing God’s image. Our faith proclaims that God is among us, and that Jesus can be found among those most precious to God, those neighbors experiencing hunger, oppression or lack, even now, even among us.
One Great Hour of Sharing connects us with people coming together to respond to the needs in their neighborhoods. It is the largest way Presbyterians connect with one another and unite with congregations in every corner of the Church and with partners all over the world. We connect in order to grow, together, while offering support that addresses shared needs in a particular context.
With God and with one another, we connect the story of Jesus who lived, healed and preached among those who had least during his earthly ministry, through ministries that seek healing and wholeness in our world today. One Great Hour of Sharing connects us to proclaim that Christ is here! God is with us! Jesus is among those who have least, those who hunger and thirst, those who are sick or alone; with those seeking justice and righteousness with their neighbors and all who are in need.
Christ is here, and not here, alone.
When we all do a little, it adds up to a lot.

Let us pray:
Connect us with our need. Connect us with our offerings. Connect us through the gift of your love, and your love for all you have created.  Amen.

Eli Gurlen is so excited about his upcoming production!
Sister Act opens this week!

SPEAKERS for this last week:
Thursday, April 7
Mr. Geoff Calkins
Columnist, The Daily Memphian

Geoff Calkins is the sports columnist for The Daily Memphian and hosts The Geoff Calkins Show on 92.9ESPN. He has covered eight Olympics, a dozen Super Bowls, and more Memphis football and basketball games than he could possibly count. But he has always been less focused on the games than on the people who play them, and on the stories those people have to tell. In that way, he takes inspiration from his great uncle, the Rev. Raymond Calkins, who served as the pastor at First Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts, from 1912 to 1940 — and who preached his last sermon at First Church in 1964, at the age of 95. “I was fond of people,” Rev. Calkins wrote. “Fonder of them than of books or anything else in the world. To be with them, to learn from them, to share with them, this I discovered to be the deepest interest in life."
Friday, April 8
Mr. Justin Pearson
Community activist and co-founder, Memphis Community Against the Pipeline

Justin J. Pearson is the fourth son of teenage parents who went on to careers in the ministry and education. His life journey has been marked by a restless pursuit of justice ranging from educational equity to access to environmental justice and liberation. He was one of the founders and leaders of Memphis Community Against the Pipeline (now Memphis Community Against Pollution, or MCAP), which successfully blocked the Byhalia Connection Pipeline. He is also the special assistant to the CEO at Year Up, an organization that furthers employment equity for young adults. Pearson has an unwavering commitment to social and racial justice for Memphis and for this country. He hopes his life preaches a sermon that will glorify God and honor his ancestors.

NEW POLICIES for WORSHIP & BUILDING USE
effective March 6, 2022
Now that the latest surge has passed, Balmoral is REMOVING many of the restrictions:

  • Wearing a mask in the church building is optional.
  • Social distancing is still encouraged.
  • Individuals exhibiting symptoms of illness are asked to not enter the building.
  • Unvaccinated individuals are asked to wear a mask, including members of community organizations that use the building.
  • Should a surge in Covid-19 infections prompt the Shelby County Health Department to recommend indoor mask-wearing and social distancing, the task force will convene to decide how to react.
  • Members who test positive for Covid-19 are asked to notify Rev. Elizabeth Dick, who will notify the congregation so members can decide how to respond.
  • To keep the SEED children as safe as possible, the procedures controlling the old end of the building will remain unchanged, except when there is a need for someone to pass through the SEED area.
  • Individuals may bring only water into the sanctuary; food and drink is permitted elsewhere.
  • Passing plates to collect the offering is permitted.
  • The SEED children and staff are allowed to use the new hallway to access the playground and the main bathrooms.
  • The drinking fountains are no longer off limits.
  • The kitchen is no longer off limits.
  • Collections for the Food Cart may resume.
NOTE: Since the church office is NOT currently manned and the outside doors remain locked, those needing access to the church office will need a key or be with someone who has a key. Please continue to stay vigilant about keeping the SEED children safe by avoiding going into their area. Thank you!
