Reflection from our Co-Pastor January 26, 2023

Gratitude for Food

Once there was a pig, just an ordinary pig on a pig farm. This ordinary pig became pork chops and sold at a bargain sale price at King Soopers. A woman bought those pork chops. She hadn’t eaten pork chops in quite a long while, but they were affordable, so…OK.

She decided to cook them in slices in a wok and so began slicing. As she sliced, mindfulness increased, and she realized that these pork chops came from a once-living pig. She remembered learning that pigs are smart animals, really smart. This awareness arose inside her and she felt Pig Spirit. She began to thank Pig Spirit for providing food for a human. Is this Christ Consciousness?

She remembered a similar experience about a very long time ago when she was a vegetarian. One summer day, her family of many people had a piglet roast. The men, father and three brothers, carved a spit and basted and turned the piglet for hours. All sat together in Adirondack Mountain Park and shared the smell of the roasting piglet, loving the very close pine forest, and each other. When the time came, the vegetarian tried hard to not eat the piglet, but it smelled so good and everyone was so enjoying it that she found a way to join in and eat it. The permission came from the mindfulness of Native Peoples around the reality of what is. She remembered reading how Native Peoples, when having felled a deer, thanked Great Spirit and thanked the dear before butchering it, and then used every part as a way of honoring the life that was taken so that other life could live. This is what she did for the piglet on the spit. She ate it, gratefully. Is this Christ Consciousness?

She remembers another time a few months ago while cutting up a whole chicken. Using her hands to

rub and rinse off the Kosher rock salt from the whole chicken, she sensed Chicken Spirit. She found that when cutting up a whole chicken, she became more mindful of the sacrifice of an actual chicken, and felt the oneness with the muscles, bones, tendons, and skin of all living animals, including humans. Then she became appropriately grateful. Deeply imbued with the sense that this had been a living chicken and now she was cutting it up to eat it, she was humbled. Is this Christ Consciousness?

When we sit under the stars, when we sit together, when we feel where we place our feet, when we breathe into our plants, and when we stroke our cat then we may remember their Spirit, and remember it as part of our Spirit, and be appropriately grateful. Is this Christ Consciousness?

Is not the Eucharist our food? During Mass, as community, together of one mind and heart, do we not recognize it as nourishment when we say…Eat, Drink, Be Nourished? Can we bring mindfulness to the body of Christ that we are?

“This food is the gift of the universe – the earth, the sky, and much hard work. May we live in a way that is worthy of this food. May we transform our unskilled states of mind, especially that of greed. May we eat only foods that nourish us and prevent illness. May we accept this food for the realization of the way of understanding and love” (Buddhist Five Contemplations before every meal in living Buddha, living Christ by Thich Nhat Hanh).
