Our Mission Is To Maintain And Strengthen The City's Diversity, Equity, And Accountability.
Greetings!

We have so much to share with you from LA Civil Rights. Our small but hard-working team has been working non-stop to not only build this department, but also host community events, launch programs, and fight for inclusion, equity and justice for all.

As African-American Heritage Month comes to a close, I want to thank everyone who hosted an event, joined our social media campaign, or tuned in for one of our televised conversations. There's more African-American history than could ever fit into one month, and we know that history is still being made to this day.

So, to the history-makers, change agents and community leaders who continue to push forward - thank you. You are the people who lift up Los Angeles, and we could never do this work without you.

Keep the faith and keep the fight,

- Capri Maddox

A Gift of Good Trouble for Los Angeles
On Friday, February 18th, just days before John Lewis' birthday, LA Civil Rights joined Mayor Eric Garcetti, Councilmembers Curren Price and Marqueece Harris-Dawson, and City Librarian John Szabo to unveil a portrait of the late civil rights icon.

First appearing in the Netflix show Family Reunion, the portrait of John Lewis standing before Black Lives Matter Plaza in Washington, D.C. was painted by Jeff Clark of Netflix and donated to the City of Los Angeles following its TV appearance. It now hangs in the Social Sciences and Philosophy department of the Central Library.

We are so grateful to Netflix, Family Reunion, City leaders and our incredible library staff for making this happen. Watch the coverage of the portrait unveiling below.

Standing Up to Anti-Black Hate
On February 17, we hosted a live televised discussion on hate crimes facing African-American communities, and this is one conversation you do not want to miss. Radio host Dominique DiPrima, Community Build CEO Robert Sausedo and Human Relations Commission President Anthony Mack brought incredible wisdom and mic-drop moments on anti-Black hate and how we build a culture of care for all communities. Thank you for your voices!
