Cathedral Communications Ministry: Media Team Forming
TUESDAY, AUGUST 16, 7 P.M., online via Zoom
Are you interested in storytelling and communications for Saint Mark's? Recently the communications committee re-launched and will help support planning for the many cathedral events, programs and initiatives with media support including virtual communications, branding, livestreaming, and website content. Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month at 7 pm via Zoom. "Saint Mark's is a big place, and there's a lot going on here," said Michael Perera, who serves on the committee and also manages the cathedral's soundboard on Sundays. "I like being on the Communications Committee because it's where we figure out how to spread the word of all the things that happen here; not just to our own community, but to all the people on I-5 who wonder what the big box on Capitol Hill is." If you would like to learn more, or would like the Zoom link, please email Kathy Wickward.

This link takes you to an Amazon wish list, which you can join and then select an item to donate. Supplies will be shared in classrooms for more than 300 students.
When selecting an item, choose "this is a gift," to indicate that your item is from Saint Mark's and use the following shipping information:

Liturgical Ministry Spotlight:
Eucharistic Minister
With a new video introduction
Serving as a Eucharistic Minister: Eucharistic Ministers assist in the Eucharist meal by serving the wine after it has been consecrated. An assisting lay minister (ALM) is a Eucharistic Minister who has other duties assigned during the service, including assisting the presider where needed.
Time commitment: Arrive 15 minutes prior to the service to vest in an alb (i.e., the white vestment worn by Eucharistic Ministers). Stay 10 minutes after to assist altar guild in the ablutions (i.e., the ceremonial cleansing of the chalice after the liturgy). Typically scheduled once every 3 weeks.
Requirements or special notes: This is a licensed ministry by the bishop and requires that a member be at least 16 years old, and a confirmed communicant in good standing (demonstrated through being faithful in corporate worship, faithful in working, prayer, and giving for the spread of the Kingdom of God, and by having a pledge on file with the parish office).
Don't miss this brief video to hear Peter Snyder explain more about this important role:

Saint Mark's Book Group is reading My Old Kentucky Home: The Astonishing Life and Reckoning of an Iconic American Song (2022) Emily Bingham. From its enormous success in 1853, Bingham traces this song about a slave being sold downriver to a cruel future to its transformation into a celebration of happy plantation life. The reception and interpretation reveals a nation's disconnect between history and warped illusion. Read more here.
Because the Ministry Fair at Saint Mark's is held on the second Sunday in September, the group has moved its event to one week later for this month only. Contact Pearl McElheran at mcelheranp@qmail.com.

Update from Meals with Tent City 3—Announcing a Volunteer Appreciation Dinner
SUNDAY EVENINGS THROUGH SEPTEMBER 4, 2:30–6:30 P.M., Bloedel Hall.
Our great thanks to our crew on Sunday, August 7! Volunteers Deborah Person, Nathan Clark, Debra Waddell, Ashley Hedeen, Kathy Sodergren, Jen Younggren, Emily Arnold, and Janet Young served a fine meal and helped out on a hot summer night. The menu included baked chicken with BBQ sauce, cornbread, watermelon, and (our specialty) ice cream sundaes. We had our usual fun as we coasted into our 8th Sunday night dinner. You may see all the details in the three photos below!
Our dinners continue for four more Sundays. Our team is making plans for a great roll out next 2023 summer. We are hoping for new and continued volunteers, an improved scheduling system, budding cooks, some accommodation for families eager to join in. Our most prized possession is our dedicated volunteers who have made this summer something new. We have learned more about our guests and each other, as we have taken turns folding napkins, cleaning tables, serving in line, and chatting on every topic possible. Thank you!

Meals at Immanuel Lutheran
As was first announced last week, the Meals Ministry has just agreed to provide four on-site lunches in August to 30–40 of our homeless friends at Immanuel Lutheran Church until their new cook arrives. Immanuel is located in the South Lake Union neighborhood, one block from the REI main store and perhaps two miles from Saint Marks. It offers holistic help to homeless folks through providing meals, a food bank, hygiene services (showers), and addiction counseling. Its logo, appropriately, is: "Building Relationships, Nurturing Community.” Co-coordinators Chris Rigos and Maris Olsen note that Immanuel also seeks volunteers for its Grocery Rescue operation and Food Bank. They will report back to Saint Mark's about possibilities for helping out at Immanuel.
Volunteer Appreciation Dinner
The Ministry Steering Committee is pleased to announce a Volunteer Appreciation Dinner on September 11 (following the departure of Tent City) for the volunteers who have served or will serve at the upcoming six dinners. No Saint Mark’s funds will be used for this “Thank You” to our volunteers. More information will be provided as we get closer to September 11. For any questions, please contact Chris Rigos at crigos33@gmail.com or Maris Olsen at maris.olsen@gmail.com

Saint Mark’s Community Meal Delivery
Would you like to be part of a new endeavor to provide and/or deliver meals to parishioners with a new baby or who are recovering from illness or surgery? Canon Wendy Claire Barrie is gathering names and contact information from folks who are willing, and she will then let you know specifics (who, what, where) when the need arises. We have two families with new babies right now who would be the first to benefit from this coordinated effort!
A homemade meal is wonderful, but so is a Trader Joe's run or a GrubHub gift card. If this is something you can help organize, or if you'd like to sign up to provide food now or in the future, please contact Canon Barrie at wbarrie@saintmarks.org

Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for? (Audience) Why should they care? (Benefit) What do I want them to do here? (Call-to-Action)
Create a great offer by adding words like "free" "personalized" "complimentary" or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take an action, so think about inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining!"
