Here’s another quick video from the CSL about how to learn more about specific pieces of legislation submit testimony to the committee discussing a bill:
Some bills and policy issues that might be of interest to students include:

  • SB 394- Requiring all advanced voting ballots be returned by 7 p.m. on election day. 
  • SB 445- Prohibiting the use of additional ballot boxes for the return of advance voting ballots.
  • SB 493- Prohibiting cities and counties from regulating plastic and other containers designed for the consumption, transportation or protection of merchandise, food or beverages.

Student Spotlight: Abeer Iqbal
KU student Abeer Iqbal has been named a 2022 Newman Civic Fellow!

The Newman Civic Fellowship honors inspiring college student leaders who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country.


Abeer's community-engaged work includes:

  • LEAD UP Summer Academy
  • Research at the KU Alzheimers' Disease Center
  • Mass Vaccination Efforts in Douglas County

Long-Term Service Opportunities:
Nonprofit Service Club
The KU Nonprofit Service Club's (NSC) mission is to bridge the gap between university students and local nonprofit organizations to encourage exploration in nonprofit careers and provide opportunities for professional development in preparation for those careers.

NSC partners with many local nonprofits to provide long-term volunteering programs to KU students. These programs aim to show students the behind-the-scenes operations of nonprofits and give community partners access to professional volunteers in areas such as business, graphic design, and operations.

Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities
Hawk Week Leaders will serve as guides to new students as they transition to the University of Kansas. They will act as positive role models and encourage involvement and intellectual engagement by connecting with new students at Hawk Week events. Apply by April 1!
Send Silence Packing is an all-day exhibit on March 29th designed to raise awareness about the impact of suicide, connect individuals to mental health resources, and inspire action for suicide prevention. This event will be hosted outside on the Watson Library's lawn.

Volunteers for the 7:30 a.m. shift will assist in setting up the display, and the 4 p.m. shift will assist in packing up the display. All other shifts will be assisting in handing out educational flyers or other assigned tasks.
SWAB KU
Be the Match will be hosting SWAB KU, a bone marrow registration drive, on campus from March 21-24. This event will be held in Capitol Federal Hall each day from 9am-4pm, and volunteers are needed to staff the table!

The Big Event volunteers provide a helping hand to Lawrence residents by completing projects in their neighborhoods. This year's event will take place on April 23!

We are now accepting nominations for our annual faculty, staff, student, and community partner awards!

Graduate Student Excellence in Community-Engaged Research and Learning
Each year, one graduate student is honored for promoting community engagement through their research, teaching, or programming initiatives that demonstrates an impact on students and the community.

Student Excellence in Service Learning
One undergraduate student is honored for showing civic commitment, community awareness, and positive community impact through service learning, as well as the academic impact and personal development through service learning or community engagement. 


Award recipients will be recognized at the CSL's annual Service Showcase and Celebration on April 21.

2022 Service Showcase + Celebration
We are looking for dynamic stories, unique projects, and inspiring service for our Spring 2022 Service Showcase happening this spring!

For this year’s showcase we are seeking students who have completed service projects or placements that have made an impact on them as students and the community. This opportunity will provide students an opportunity to network with service minded professionals, practice their presentation skills, and add additional experience to their educational portfolio.

Complete a Certificate in Service Learning
We invite you to consider earning a Certificate in Service Learning. Obtaining your certificate involves taking classes, engaging in volunteer work, and reflecting on your service learning experiences. Once you have earned the certificate, it is acknowledged on your official academic transcript.

There are a number of steps to complete the Certificate in Service Learningmake sure you visit our website to learn more about where you are in the process or where to start if you are just beginning!
