Shalom AKSE Congregants and Friends of AKSE:

The Torah portion this Shabbat is Matot/Masei. We hope to welcome you at our in-person Shabbat services. The Kabbalat Shabbat service on Friday starts at 6:30 p.m. Shabbat morning services are at 9 a.m. Saturday. Shabbat afternoon services (Mincha/Ma'ariv) are at 7:55 p.m. Saturday this week. Cantor Redfern is officiating.

Rosh Chodesh Av is tonight and Friday. We will welcome the new month with a Shacharit service, including Hallel, via Zoom at 8 a.m. Friday.

Please note that Dianne Seidel will be at the Kabbalat Shabbat service on Friday at 6:30 p.m. to recite Kaddish in observance of the Yahrzeit of her mother, Jean Drowos. Please make an effort to attend so that we will have a minyan.

Lisa Elliott will deliver the Torah Talk at Shabbat morning services. Her topic is "Time and Space."

This Shabbat's printed newsletter, which will be available at services, may also be viewed online here. You will find candle lighting, service and Havdalah times, service leaders, Torah and Haftorah readings, and this week's condolences and Yahrzeits there.
Please note this week's regular events:
Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. -- Mincha at the JCC
Thursday at 9 a.m. -- Shacharit at AKSE

Please note several deadlines THIS WEEKEND, all related to preparations for the High Holidays.
  • The deadline for Yizkor Book responses, so that we can properly honor the memories of your departed relatives and friends, is this Friday, July 29.
  • The deadline for ordering jars of honey to be sent to non-member family and friends with free shipping is this Monday, August 1.
  • The deadline for ordering handmade Rosh Hashanah fused glass pins is this Monday, August 1.
See details below for all three of these projects.

YIZKOR BOOK RESPONSES - LAST CALL

If you have not yet sent in your Yizkor Book form and you want your loved ones to be included, you must send them in NOW. The High Holidays are around the corner, and the deadline for this year's Yizkor Book is TODAY (Friday, July 29). If you have any questions, please call (302-287-3344) or email (MARosenberg18@gmail.com) Max Rosenberg.

SISTERHOOD ROSH HASHANAH HONEY PROJECT

On July 6 you received an email with AKSE Rosh Hashanah Honey Greetings in the subject line. This email will guide you through the steps to send honey to all AKSE members for just $118 or designate certain individuals/families. You can even customize your greetings. The deadline to send honey to AKSE members is September 6, so that we have time to prepare and mail out the lists of those who have contributed.

Payment may be made by check (payable to AKSE Sisterhood) or via credit card online. Payment by check saves AKSE the credit card/Paypal fees. Checks should be mailed to: Adas Kodesch Shel Emeth (Attention Sisterhood), 2412 Pennsylvania Avenue, Wilmington, DE 19806.

It's just as simple to send jars of honey to non-member friends and family all over the US by going to www.honeyfromtheheart.org/AKS. These jars cost $13 and delivery is free if you order before August 1.

Start the new year on a sweet note! If you have any questions about ordering either for AKSE members or others, email Sylvia Wagman at srwag8@comcast.net.

Here's how to send honey greetings to fellow AKSE members:

CELEBRATE THE NEW YEAR IN STYLE WITH LOVELY ROSH HASHANAH FUSED GLASS DECORATIVE PINS
These pins by Glen Mills artist Ruth Newman would also make great gifts. Each pin is $18 with Sisterhood receiving a donation per pin. Orders will be taken through August 1, 2022 on a first-come, first-serve basis for the remaining two Rosh Hashanah pins. Delivery will be at the beginning of September.

The Rosh Hashanah pin features an apple, honey jar and shofar. Each pin is approximately 2 inches across.

To order or for any questions, email Sylvia at srwag8@comcast.net.
The AKSE Education Committee has begun a new program on Shabbat mornings. Torah Talks are taking the place of sermons or Divrei Torah. These talks are being led by members of the AKSE community, as well as by members of the wider Jewish community.

A variety of formats are available to those who volunteer to lead Torah Talks: traditional Divrei Torah, short discussions of ethical or historical questions raised by the text, reflections on seasonal holidays and traditions, and talks that connect with the speakers’ personal interests and expertise in Jewish culture. Our goal is to bring variety, innovation, and creativity to Shabbat learning. Look for announcements of the speakers and topics for upcoming Torah Talks in future Shofars and email newsletters.

If you have wisdom to share, a favorite parsha to delve into, or a special interest to showcase, please get in touch with Lisa Elliott (lelliott50@comcast.net) or Harriet Ainbinder (haza@verizon.net) to schedule your Torah Talk.

AKSE STANDARD FOR FULL VACCINATION
If necessary, please update your vaccination record with AKSE

The Board of Governors has adopted a 3-shot standard for an individual to be considered "fully" vaccinated against COVID-19. This standard means that the vaccination database compiled in 2021 must be updated.

If you have not already provided AKSE with proof that meets this newer 3-shot standard, please do so as soon as you can by one of the following methods:
  1. Email bookkeeper@akse.org or a_bleier@verizon.net with an attached copy of your documentation.
  2. Mail a copy of your documentation to the Office at 2412 Pennsylvania Ave., Wilmington, DE 19806 (enough in advance that it will be on file when you plan to attend a service or other activity).
  3. Present your documentation, in person, to Kathleen Taylor during her office hours of 10 AM to 2 PM, Tuesday-Thursday.
  4. Present your documentation "at the door" when you arrive at a service or activity - Note that digital proof of vaccination cannot be reviewed on Shabbat or Yom Tov.

Currently, only Kathleen Taylor, Alan Bleier, and Alan's designate will review and accept proof of vaccination.
