The Power of Entrepreneurial Families
Message from the Nulsen Family
Executive Director
As we move into the second half of the academic year, we're already starting to make plans for 2022-2023. We’ll have some exciting announcements soon, but in the meantime, I'm thrilled to share some of our latest recognitions and celebrations, which you will read more about in the sections below. Here are the highlights:

  • William B. Gartner, Bertarelli Foundation Distinguished Professor of Family Entrepreneurship and Director of Research at the IFE, has received the highly prestigious designation for Justin G. Longnecker Fellow by the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE).
  • We are celebrating Women's History Month with a special series on social media highlighting amazing women entrepreneurial leaders in the IFE community. This also coincides with the launch of our Instagram account (link in section below).
  • A growing number of faculty at Babson are engaged in innovative research in the area of family entrepreneurship, including William Gartner, PJ Guinan, Alisa Jno-Charles, Eliana Crosina, Caroline Daniels, Angela Randolph, and Keith Rollag, to name just a few.
  • Our Family Entrepreneurial Leadership program is expanding, both in the student program and the young professional program. This year, we have over 50 students in the cohort and a second cohort of the young professional program started in February.

While it is nice to be recognized of the work that we do at the IFE, I still find myself having to explain to new acquaintances one very important yet often neglected fact: over 70% of global GDP comes from family businesses. So it is not an exaggeration to say that entrepreneurial families are the world's driving force to create positive change, both economically and socially. One of our Babson families, the Zamoras, is a great example to illustrate that. I hope you will enjoy reading their story.

Lastly, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you all again for your support of the Institute. We have some really exciting plans in the works, and I can't wait to tell you more about them in the coming weeks!

Sincerely,
Thought Leadership
Entrepreneurial Families: The greatest force for growth and positive change in the world
Research shows family businesses contribute over 70% of global GDP. This means entrepreneurial families are one of the greatest forces for growth and positive change on the planet. At Babson’s Institute for Family Entrepreneurship, we are working with families to understand how they can create economic and social value, simultaneously. For a lot of entrepreneurial families, like the Zamora family, the value of their business is not only about economics, but also the long term social impact the business has on the community.
Lauri Union Recognized Again as a Leading Global Academic in Family Enterprise
For the second year in a row, Lauri Union, the Nulsen Family Executive Director of the Institute for Family Entrepreneurship at Babson College, was named one of 16 leading global academics and a Top 100 influencer in the family enterprise sector by Family Capital, a leading family enterprise publication.
William Gartner Named USASBE Justin G. Longnecker Fellow
Babson College Professor William Gartner was named a Justin G. Longnecker Fellow by the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE) at its annual conference.

Gartner, the Bertarelli Foundation Distinguished Professor of Family Entrepreneurship at Babson, was one of four recipients named a Longnecker Fellow, the highest recognition that USASBE gives to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the development, furtherance, and benefit of small and medium businesses.

Research on Family Entrepreneurship
As the IFE's student programming is growing, so is the research capacity of our faculty. A growing number of faculty at Babson are engaged in innovative research in the area of family entrepreneurship, including William Gartner, PJ Guinan, Alisa Jno-Charles, Eliana Crosina, Caroline Daniels, Angela Randolph, and Keith Rollag, to name a few.

Over 225 Babson families have joined the IFE’s Family Entrepreneurship Research Community and are engaged in the research of Professors Gartner, Jon-Charles, Guinan, and Rollag. Through survey responses and interviews, these families are contributing to our knowledge and programming, Community members participate in short surveys and interviews, plus have early access to our research results and findings. Additionally, members receive exclusive invitations to special webinars and other events where our research faculty share and discuss research results along with implications for business families.

We invite all entrepreneurial families to join this meaningful project to share their unique experience and learn from each other.
Family Entrepreneurial Leadership Program
In its fourth year since inception, our Family Entrepreneurial Leadership (FEL) program is seeing its largest cohort. This year, we have over 50 students in the program and we're hosting a mini retreat at the end of the month to not only celebrate it, but to also provide a networking and learning opportunity for our students outside of their groups.

Our FEL certificate program for young professionals is also expanding. Our first group just completed the program last December and the second group started in February.

As one participant puts it, "This program was the most engaging and intriguing executive education course I have ever taken. The peer-learning through shared experiences combined with thoughtful workshops taught by leading professors and thought leaders helped me take actionable change personally and professionally to elevate my performance and the success of my business.”
