“When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion,
we were like those who dream.
Then our mouth was filled with laughter,
    and our tongue with shouts of joy;
then it was said among the nations,
“The Lord has done great things for them.”
The Lord has done great things for us,
    and we rejoiced.
     Restore our fortunes, O Lord,
like the watercourses in the Negeb.
May those who sow in tears
    reap with shouts of joy.
Those who go out weeping,
    bearing the seed for sowing,
shall come home with shouts of joy,
    carrying their sheaves.”
Psalm 126

Can you think of a time in your life when you experienced the faithfulness of God in a way that you really needed?

Maybe it was an answer to prayer.
Maybe it was in healing.
Maybe someone came along and encouraged you at just the right time.

These moments are anchors in our faith.
They are moments of resurrection,
And they are meant to be remembered.
They breathe new life into us, and they remind us in difficult moments that God showed up once before, and so we can be assured that God will do it again.

Life gets hard sometimes. Temptation to do things we know we ought not to do can be strong. Tough days come when we get disappointed in ourselves, in others, or in the lot in life we were given. Recalling God’s own faithfulness in our past moments can remind us to look forward in hope.

This psalm is a community petition for help. The community is looking back in memory to God’s deliverance and their joy on that occasion. And they are praying in a new moment of difficulty that God would come and do it again.

In this season of Lent, when we pay special attention to the broken places and wrestling spaces in our own lives… and in the world around us… the psalmist proclaims that we are invited to put our hope in a God whose faithfulness knows no end. We are invited to pray that God would come into those spaces in our lives in a new way. And we are invited to be encouraged that we serve a God who doesn’t quit on us, just because sometimes we do.

God is present and ready to hear your prayer, my friends. So where do you need new life and God’s resurrection power today?
