Sunapee Happenings

Oh what an odd winter this has been... and it’s only February. We’ve experienced a couple of ripper weather events marked by snow, ice and wicked wind... accompanied by stern warnings NOT to be out and about on the icy roads, subject to dangerous whiteouts. Then, suddenly, the sun shines brightly... turning even the tiniest tree branch, festooned with icicles, into sparkling diamonds...
... a bit further down Lake Ave and one more of a doe on a stroll.
Celebrating all things winter:
The 106th Newport Winter Carnival kicks off February 10th!
Community-wide Scavenger Hunt during Winter Carnival
Saturday & Sunday from 7am to 7pm.

Order your tickets now for Northern Stage production of “Heisenberg”
A 71-year old Irish butcher sits on a bench in St. Pancras Station. A 42-year old woman from New Jersey impulsively plants a kiss on his neck. What starts with an electric encounter between two strangers, grows, over six scenes, into a complex and life-changing relationship. Simon Stephens’ HEISENBERG lays bare the beauty in the natural unpredictability of human connection. The quietly powerful Heisenberg will bring us back into the much-missed Byrne Theater, for the first indoor main stage production since March 2020.

The entries were judged by local author and award-winning writer, Megan Baxter, who teaches creative writing at Colby Sawyer College. Here are Megan’s comments about this year’s entries: “This year’s winners reflect a deep sense of experimentation and creativity with the written word. From fast-paced genre stories to inspiring creative nonfiction and beautifully introspective poems, the work here is truly extraordinary. Overall, I think the submissions offered a window into the life of young people living and creating during these challenging times, supported by a powerful network of family, friends, and educators. I am proud to report that we received more submissions this year which deepened the playing field. Ultimately, the winning pieces demonstrated creativity, an original voice, and an understanding of the craft of writing. I want to congratulate everyone who submitted work to the Second Annual Teen Writing Competition because every entry was a joy to read. I hope that all the writers will continue reading, writing, and learning, and look forward to seeing their work grow with time.” Every teen who submitted their work is eligible to attend a Zoom writing workshop, led by Megan Baxter, on 3 consecutive Saturdays in February. The winning authors and their submissions will be posted on the CFA website. Please check them out and discover the talent that abounds in our youth community.
