Newell receives Mellon grant
|
CLAS faculty affiliate Margaret Newell, a distinguished professor in the Department of History, has received a a Mellon Foundation grant in the amount of $492,000.
Newell's project, entitled "Native Americans and African Americans in and out of the U.S. Body Politic," seeks to uncover the hidden histories in civic engagement and voting rights of these two groups from 1780 to 1920. The funds will be used to create an undergraduate history research lab in which students will work with Newell and other Ohio State PhDs to create biographies of African American and Native American activists who worked to secure or maintain civil rights before the modern Civil Rights movement. Newell also plans to invite students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities and tribal colleges to participate. Learn more here.
Newell also leads the Global "Hotspots" of the Early Modern World: Argentina study abroad program, in which students learn how indigenous groups shaped colonial society, how global forces pushed Argentina toward revolution and how race, class, and immigration affected politics and nation-building, past and present.
