Important Spring Primary Dates

Update from Department of Public Works:

What's that Noise Coming from My Drain?

In this photo, DPW crewman, CJ Zanger, can be seen "jetting" the sanitary system on Ardmore Avenue. The process of hydro-jetting is a critical preventative maintenance technique that ensures the sanitary system throughout the Village is clear of obstruction. In fact, every year 1/3 of the Village's sanitary system receives this treatment.

During the hydro-jetting process, you may hear water moving or "echoing" in the drain pipes of your home. This is a normal side effect of the high pressure flushing taking place at the sanitary main in the street.

What to do if you experience an odor, or water being emitted from your drain:

As the hydro-jetting process occurs under high pressure, air may move its way up the sanitary lateral of your home and force water, or odor out of your floor drain, sink or tub.

Simply pour water into the floor drain to prevent air pressure from coming back into the home. Run your faucets for a minute to flush the drain system. That's it!

As always, the Department of Public Works thanks you for driving carefully around the crew while they perform these important duties in the street.

Register here for Love is Love: An Evening at home with BJ Gruling & Rick Clark

A message from the hosts of our January 26 event: "Gather with us as we learn more about being LGBTQ partners, both in life and business, with BJ Gruling & Rick Clark while enjoying some of their favorite food and drink to celebrate Love and the New Year. Valentine's Day is right around the corner...let's raise a glass because Love is Love."

BJ is American raised in Wisconsin while Rick is Canadian raised north of Toronto. We met in the late 1980s while working at a hospital in Saudi Arabia. We are both science and healthcare professionals. This is quite an unusual place (Saudi Arabia ) for gay people to meet. We were also able to travel the world while living in the Middle East. In 1990 after we had each returned to our birth country, Rick relocated to Milwaukee where I was now residing as there was a high demand for his profession.

"We lived in several different neighborhoods around Milwaukee and have now been Whitefish Bay residents for over 20 years. We opened Kilwins Milwaukee-Bayshore in 2014 and enjoy supporting the communities we live in and especially our youth.”

NSHD Healthy Highlight 1/18/2023: Social Media & Adolescent Mental Health

Social media is ever-changing. TikTok made it’s debut in 2018 and quickly gained popularity, while Facebook usage among teens has dropped dramatically since 2014-15 (Source). Although there are many benefits to social media, like staying connected with long distance friends, more easily building relationships and finding people with similar unique interests, it comes with risks. The negative effects of social media on adolescent mental health are evident.

What is social media? It differs from traditional news sources because it is multi-directional. Users can interact with one another through likes, comments, shares, tags & more. Social media allows you to build online networks with people and create virtual communities.

As of early 2022, there were 195 social media platforms. The most popular platforms among teens ages 13-17 are YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat (Source).

Studies show increased social media use is associated with increased feelings of:

  • Envy
  • Inadequacy
  • Loneliness
  • Adolescent depression
  • Death by suicide
  • Anxiety
  • ADHD symptoms
  • Eating disorders
  • Sleep deprivation
