Health updates for residents of the
Roanoke City & Alleghany Health Districts (RCAHD)
NEW! All RCAHD Communities are considered in
Low Transmission by the CDC
As cases have continued to decline from the recent peak during the Omicron surge, the CDC's new community level transmission tool helps people determine what prevention steps to take based on the latest data. At this time, all RCAHD localities (Alleghany, Botetourt, Craig, Roanoke, and the cities of Roanoke, Covington and Salem) are all classified in the Low Risk level.

We will continue to closely monitor the data for any change in trends or outbreaks that may occur. While we are pleased our localities are currently seeing less disease, COVID-19 is still present and capable of causing severe illness, especially among the unvaccinated. Stay up-to-date with your vaccinations and follow recommendations for isolation and quarantine if you are exposed or have symptoms.

Do you have a private well or septic system?

You may qualify to have it fixed, FREE of cost.

If you have a house with a well or septic system that needs to be fixed, and your income is at or below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines, VDH's Septic Well and Assistance Program can cover the cost.

For example, if you have a family of four with a total household income of less than $55,500, your well and septic system is eligible for repair or replacement at no cost to you. Funding for this program comes from Virginia's share of the American Rescue Plan Act. Visit VDH's Septic Well and Assistance Program webpage for more information.

Local COVID-19 activity has been at a stable, low level for the past three weeks. As the more transmissible BA.2 Omicron variant now comprises more than 50% of cases, we continue to encourage all residents to make sure they are up-to-date on their vaccines.
