FROM THE CHIEF
Dear Residents,

Happy Spring!

We were very excited to debut our newest fire engine at Fire Station 62 last month. The 21,000-pound truck carries up to 500 gallons of water and nearly 2,000 feet of hose.

As the weather warms and you begin your spring cleaning, please keep safety in mind when using household chemicals. It's important to store cleaners in a safe area and please do not to mix chemicals.

You may find yourself enjoying the outdoors by heading to the Chattahoochee River for tubing or fishing this spring. Please take a moment to read some safety tips and learn about the water releases as your plan your outdoor activities.

We hope you'll stay connected with us - follow along on our FacebookTwitter, and Instagram accounts to see photos, news, and safety information.

Stay safe this spring,

Chris Coons

JCFD debuts new fire engine
The newest Johns Creek fire engine arrived at Station 62 and was welcomed in March with a “push-in” ceremony, which is a tradition of fire department personnel moving the truck into the fire station.

The fire engine is 21,000 pounds, carries 500 gallons of water, holds approximately 2,000 feet of hose, and has 525 horsepower.

Mayor John Bradberry and City Council members Dilip Tunki, Stacy Skinner, Bob Erramilli, Larry DiBiase, and Erin Elwood attended the ceremony.
Outdoor Burning prohibited May 1 - Sept. 30
A state-mandated burn ban on all outdoor burning is in effect from May 1 through Sept. 30.

The Georgia Environmental Protection Division imposes the ban to comply with Federal Clean Air Regulations. According to the Georgia Forestry Commission, careless burning of debris is the leading cause of wildfires in Georgia.

For more information about the burn ban, see the outdoor Burning Guidelines on the City website. Submit an Outdoor Burn Request using this online form. Questions? Call Johns Creek Fire Marshal Jeffrey Williamson at 678-512-3363 or email him at FireMarshal@JohnsCreekGA.gov.

Deputy Chief Akins celebrates 43 years of fire service

Tips for safe spring cleaning
It is important to follow instructions on the labels of cleaning products, and not to mix products; doing so can lead to the production of dangerous combinations of liquids and gases.

Consumers should also ensure safe storage of household cleaning products; keep them in their intended containers and never place combustible products near a heat source.

Keep safety in mind while enjoying Chattahoochee River
As the weather is getting warmer, the Chattahoochee River can be a great place to play, fish, or relax. It looks like a languid, easy-going river, but its appearance can be dangerously deceptive. When the Corps of Engineers releases water from Lake Lanier, the resulting surge of water can cause the river to rise several feet in a short amount of time.

During a release, the Chattahoochee can rise as much as 11 feet in minutes. The water can be as cold as 47 degrees, enough to bring on hypothermia and hamper efforts to swim to shore.

During the summer, the Johns Creek Fire Department Swift Water Rescue Team responds several times a month to emergency calls to rescue people from the frigid, rushing water of the river.
