| Improving Quality of Life in District 4 |
We've been working closely with city staff and departments to bring improvements to the district. Many have been completed and still many are on the horizon. Here's a quick rundown of the latest projects being completed in our community. In the coming weeks we will highlight the road projects coming to District 4 and preview parks and other infrastructure projects.
Brooktree Sidewalk: We’re happy to announce that the construction of sidewalk on the south end of Brooktree Park is in progress! Neighbors have requested this sidewalk from the very beginning of my time in office to improve accessibility, safety and access to the park. This sidewalk also provides a safe route to school and makes it easier for students at Brooktree Elementary to walk.
| | Sierra Road Safety: Sierra Road has long been a spot for excessive speeding, donuts, illegal parking and accidents; prompting both the City of San Jose, at our office’s direction, and the County of Santa Clara to conduct speed studies. These studies that covered both the City and County controlled sections of the road showed that drivers were speeding well in excess of the posted limits. The County has since changes the speed limit along it’s stretch as well as adding striping to help narrow the lanes. City staff is in the process of adding bollards between Lundy Ave and Flickinger Ave to separate the roadway from bike lanes, eliminate illegal parking and narrow the road ways to reduce speeding. Additional speed mitigation measures are pending. | |
Flickinger Park Improvements: In the fall of 2022, San Jose National Little League informed the District 4 Council Office that the Flickinger playing fields needed some attention. There were bare spots in several places on the fields, holes caused by ground squirrels, and the facilities were generally in need of a facelift.
We worked with staff in the Park, Recreation and Neighborhood Services (PRNS) department to improve the conditions of the field. Parks staff shut down and fenced off the fields for the winter, performed repair work on the sprinkler system, did pest control to get rid of the ground squirrels, reseeded and sodded the fields, and got rid of weeds. In addition, Parks staff is adding new bleachers, and painting and completing some repairs to the facilities. When San Jose Little League hits the field to start its season this spring, the Flickinger ball fields will be in much better playing condition than before.

| More Opportunities to Help Plant Trees! | Last weekend my staff and I joined Our City Forest and dozens of volunteers to plant nearly 20 trees in Alviso Park on Wilson Ave. We've got a goal of planting 1,000 trees in the district during my first term. |
Here are a few more opportunities for you to get involved:
Our City Forest is planting trees all along Zanker Avenue throughout the month and they're looking for volunteers on three Saturday mornings. See more information and sign up to help by clicking these links: Saturday, February 11 • Saturday, February 18th • Saturday, February 25th
| Our beloved Alum Rock Park remains closed to the public due to dangerous conditions near trails and waterways. Parks & Rec is working hard to make repairs, and asks for patience until the park can be reopened. You can find more information about this closure here. | |

Who's making a big difference in your community? A great teacher, business owner, a police officer who goes beyond the call of duty. Maybe there's someone spending their free time organizing creek clean-ups or blanket drives for the unhoused... If you've got someone special in your neighborhood, let us know by nominating them to be a District Hero! | |
Councilmember David Cohen promotes community cleanup events for residents throughout the year. It's a fun and easy way for everyone to get involved in their community, complete community service hours, and help serve their neighborhood by removing debris, trash and illegally dumped items from streets, creeks, and parks.
Join us in beautifying District 4 by participating in our next Neighborhood Clean Up!
If you would like to volunteer, please email Tim Orozco (tim.orozco@sanjoseca.gov)

Local businesses have a new opportunity to reinvigorate their business, save money, and support community-wide energy conservation efforts through a new program from San José Clean Energy, the local clean electricity provider operated by the City of San José.
The San José Energy Efficient Business Program has unlocked several rebates to San José business owners for qualifying HVAC, refrigeration, or water heating projects. These rebates, totaling up to 80–90% off the project cost, will make renovations to your small business more affordable and kickstarting these upgrades so much easier! All business customers with an active San José Clean Energy account are invited to participate.
Want to see if your project qualifies for the rebates above? Learn more or find a participating contractor at SanJoseCleanEnergy.org/Business.
