Hayden Flood Relief Fund

Pulling Together

When YVCF opened the Hayden Flood Relief Fund to help residents affected by the Dry Creek flood in April, we knew we could do some good through our individual donors but didn't foresee the outpouring of interest and care from across the state. We're incredibly thankful for our local media outlets who helped spread the word about the fund, as well as Kyle Clark at 9NEWS who highlighted the issue through his 'Word of Thanks' Next with Kyle Clark segment. Donations through that campaign have surpassed $56,000 (!), and total donations are over $100,000. Although still a ways from the $700,000 estimated need, these contributions will truly help kickstart repairs and recovery.

A selection of heartwarming comments from donors to the fundraising page:

“Those in Hayden are in my heart. My folks worked crisis relief services in the U.S. for 2 decades. My mother always said that floods were the worst. Best of luck getting things set back to rights.” – Karen

“My house burned to the ground in the Black Forest Fire in 2013 and there were a lot of houses that burned down that were uninsured or had no insurance at all. We still had our insurance so we did okay. And flood insurance is expensive and optional unless you live in a flood plain. I can only imagine how terrible the situation is in Hayden. So I know how important it is that communities step up and help each other out.”  Scott

Grant Highlights

There's never a shortage of grantmaking activity at the Community Foundation. We process grants twice a month, and grant cycles might include donor advised fund (DAF) requests, designated fund grants, scholarships, and giving circle grants, and more! For the two month period from mid-May to mid-July, YVCF issued over $1.5 million in grants and scholarships.

Sometimes we're so busy that we forget how exciting and inspiring our everyday work is, and we neglect to share that news with you. Here's a small glimpse of some of our granting within the last two months.

  • Steamboat Reading, Inc. received $8,500 from four DAFs held at YVCF for school-based tutoring for the 2023/2024 school year, to supplement a CDE grant.
  • The 4 Yellow Foundation Fund granted $10,000 each to Memorial Regional Health and Yampa Valley Medical Center Foundation for direct assistance for cancer patients.
  • Two DAFs advised grants of $11,000 to Partners for Youth to support a new school-based mentoring program in Moffat County.
  • Scholarships worth $345,375 were issued to schools across the U.S. as the bulk of spring scholarships were processed.
  • Reaching Everyone Preventing Suicide was granted $20,500 for free mental health counseling services.

Giving Circles

In just the last two months, the Women's Giving Circle has granted $15,185 to nonprofits representing community members in immediate need of assistance, such as purchase of a portable oxygen tank, lodging expenses in Denver during cancer treatment, and basketball summer camp fees for a youth.

Due to an unprecedented number of requests for assistance for needs for which no other funding is available, this Giving Circle is running low on funding and is in need of new members and donations. Please consider joining the effort to support those in our valley who are struggling, and join the Women’s Giving Circle by

This Giving Circle is a wonderful way to meet new friends and learn about needs in our community. Email Traci to learn about an upcoming social gathering!

The WZ Giving Circle completed its second of three triannual grant cycles, recommending seven grants for a total of $22,313 to nonprofits representing community members in need. Examples of needs met include assisting first-time homeowners in Moffat County remove a chimney in danger of collapse and helping a single parent pay for preschool for a child with disabilities.

New members are welcome in both giving circles.

As membership grows, so does our ability to help!

Community Grant Cycle Fundraising

This year's annual Community Grant Cycle has received 78 grant applications totaling $632,217 in funding requests. Last year we awarded $531,913 to 74 Routt & Moffat County nonprofits. Four of this year's requests, totaling $107,449, are for “impact funding” targeting projects and initiatives that drive transformational change, while the remainder are general grants to support ongoing operations, capacity building, and essential programs and services.

The Community Grant program is structured with an extensive vetting process which includes financial oversight, grant application review, and site visits by a committee of over 20 community members and leaders. You can be sure that your donation is directed to organizations that are well-run with good leadership and financial management and will be put to good use in our valley.

Because YVCF has limited discretionary funds, we rely on the generosity of donors to make this program a success and to drive impactful funding to deserving organizations. To support the program, you can make a gift to this year's 2023 Community Grants Fund or to one (or more!) of our Community Grants Endowments.

Nonprofit Infrastructure Grant is Open

NPI email header

Nonprofit organizations in five Northwest Colorado counties (Eagle, Garfield, Moffat, Rio Blanco and Routt) may be eligible for a piece of $33.1 million in grant funding offered through the Nonprofit Infrastructure (NPI) Grant Program, a statewide grant program for small, community-based nonprofit organizations providing services to communities who have historically been underrepresented, underserved, or under-resourced.

The Yampa Valley Community Foundation (YVCF), collectively with the Colorado Department of Local Affairs (DOLA), seeks applicants with annual budgets between $150,000 and $2,000,000 that have been affected by the infrastructure aftermath of COVID-19. Grants are for organizational infrastructure improvements such as strategic planning, professional development for board and staff, technology, etc., not for new programming.

YVCF is one of eight Regional Access Partners collaborating with DOLA to provide technical assistance and administer grants within distinctive regions, emphasizing a hyper-local focus on teamwork and support.

To apply, interested applicants can learn more at YVCF/NPI, or contact YVCF's Program Officer Greg Hamilton directly via email greg@yvcf.org (recommended for faster response) or by phone (970) 439-4443. The application is open now and will close on August 31, 2023.
