Get Ready for Library Card Sign Up Month

September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries nationwide unite to remind parents, caregivers and students that signing up for a library card is the first step towards academic achievement and lifelong learning. ALA provides a variety of free tools and ideas for promoting Library Card Sign-up Month in your local community. Visit https://www.ala.org/conferencesevents/celebrationweeks/card for more info!

Tony Award-winning performer, actress, singer-songwriter, and philanthropist Idina Menzel and her sister author and educator Cara Mentzel will serve as honorary chairs of Library Card Sign-Up Month 2022. As honorary chairs, Idina and Cara remind everyone that one of the best places to find your voice is at the library.

"It's a little card that goes a loud way. Let your imagination sing at the library." — Idina Menzel

The library is where your imagination sings. Get your library card and 'check it out' today." — Cara Mentzel

Sustainable Libraries

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) released the newest data and documentation from its 2020 Public Libraries Survey of about 9,000 U.S. (the 50 states; Washington, D.C.; and U.S. territories) library systems (main libraries, library branches, and bookmobiles). The survey, which has been conducted annually since 1988, “examines key indicators of public library use, financial health, staffing, and resources” and looks at strategies public libraries have implemented during the pandemic. This release builds on the preview shared in June via a two-page infographic, “How Public Libraries Adapted to Serve Their Communities at the Start of the COVID-19 Pandemic.”

Programming

Save the Date! Don’t forget Banned Books Week is held September 26th – October 2nd, 2022! Banned Books Week celebrates the freedom to read and spotlighting current and historical attempts to censor books in libraries and schools. For 40 years, this annual event has brought together the entire book lover community in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular. The books showcased during Banned Books Week have all been targeted for removal or restriction in libraries and schools. By focusing on efforts across the country to remove or restrict access to books, Banned Books Week draws national attention to the harms of censorship. The theme for Banned Books Week 2022 is "Books Unite Us. Censorship Divides Us." For promotional materials and program ideas visit https://bannedbooksweek.org/.

Trustee Resources

Ask Me Anything (AMA) with Rebekkah Smith Aldrich, MHLS Executive Director & Co-Author of the Handbook for Library Trustees of New York State is a monthly installment where Rebekkah will answer your questions! Feel free to submit your question here or to contact Rebekkah at rsmith@midhudson.org with the subject line: AMA Trustee Question.

Q. Who drafts policy? Trustees or the director?

A. Usually the library director, as the board’s technical advisor, will recommend and draft policy. Policies should then be reviewed by the board’s Policy Committee or appropriate committee before being recommended to the full board for adoption. Check out the “Library Policies” chapter of the Handbook for Library Trustees of New York State for a checklist of what to think through when presented with a new policy.

Administration & Management

Reminder: The next 414 Vote Libraries Meetup will be Thursday, September 8th, 2022, at 2:00pm. At this meetup we’ll check in with MHLS member library teams going for a 414 vote this year, share best practices, and ensure your team is on track to hit all the required milestones for a successful vote. This is also an opportunity to learn from your peers also working on 414 vote campaigns this year.
