Ontario to focus on building highways, hospitals and houses as legislature resumes

Highways, transportation infrastructure, trades training and housing were some of the priorities set out the provincial throne speech delivered by the Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario Tuesday in the legislature.

Dowdeswell confirmed the government plans to spend $86.6 billion over the next 10 years to build and expand roads, highways and transit infrastructure in the province. This will include such projects as building Highway 413 and the Bradford Bypass, as well as widening Highway 3, rebuilding a stretch of Highway 101, and twinning the Garden City Skyway bridge along the Queen Elizabeth Way.

WSP Canada announces carbon-neutral Olympic training support for budding engineer

WSP Canada has announced it has formed a partnership with Canadian Olympic freestyle skiing medalist Marion Thenault to support her efforts to become a carbon-neutral athlete.

Currently studying to become an aerospace engineer at Montreal’s Concordia University, Thenault will work with members of WSP Canada’s Earth and Environment team to determine the carbon footprint of her freestyle skiing activities as she travels around the world to events on the World Cup circuit. WSP’s climate change experts will quantify the emissions associated with her activities, look for ways to reduce her footprint, and find solutions to offset her actions.

Non-residential rebound leads to moderate June gains

Gains in the non-residential sector helped nudge overall investment in building construction up 0.3 per cent, to $20.8 billion, in June. Statistics Canada reports most of the strength for the month came from Ontario, where increases were posted in all building components as the province rebounded from a weak May that had been impacted by construction strikes.

Advances across all components in the non-residential construction sector led to a jump of 2.4 per cent, as the sector reached $5.3 billion in June. Commercial investment grew 2.7 per cent from May, hitting $3 billion. Ontario’s 4.1 per cent gain accounted for much of the growth.

Cambridge hires architect for new rec complex and library

With a goal of achieving an energy-efficient structure built to LEED Gold standard, and the potential to reduce the scope of the original design, the city has hired an architect for its new recreation complex and library.

Council approved the move Tuesday after the city received six competitive bids on the project. Staff selected Toronto firm MacLennan Jaunkalns Miller Architects Ltd. after carefully considering all options including cost.

The cost to complete the concept and design work on a modified build has been set at an upset limit of $460,000 and increases the total design budget on the project by $799,380 for a total revised budget of $6.3 million.

RioCan posts second quarter net income of $78.5 million

RioCan Real Estate Investment Trust reported second-quarter net income of $78.5 million, down from $145.3 million a year ago, as committed occupancy returned to pre-pandemic levels.

RioCan says same property net operating income (NOI) growth to 6.2 per cent helped the trust in the second quarter, in addition to higher residential NOI and residential inventory gains, but this was offset by a net loss related to the fair value of investment properties of $42.3 million compared to a $22.9 million fair value gain in the same period last year.

Revenue totalled $308.4 million for the quarter ended June 30, up from $297.7 million in the same quarter last year.
