Message From the Director
Greetings Madrone Trail Community,
It’s really starting to seem like Spring is truly right around the corner, except for the freezing nights.
Much appreciation to Mrs. Richardson’s 6th graders and dance team for the wonderful assembly this morning. Such a wonderful way to start the day and end the week.
I’m very excited about the progress we have made on the Kitchen, I just wish it was moving faster. Apparently there is now a Glass shortage which is delaying getting some sneeze guards which we need to pass the health inspection. Argh.
We have ordered 5 new Bi-Level outdoor water bottle filling stations. Given these are also backed up, I have decided we should start collecting bids now to install them once they arrive because plumbers are now also booking 2-4 months out.
I’m also very excited that we are ramping up our science equipment to further enrich our students’ hands on experience. In the past, it was usually just the teacher that performed the science experiment while the students looked on. The goal now is to obtain enough equipment for the students, either working independently or in small groups, to perform experiments.
A lot of this is on my mind because we have switched around the SIA grant funding given the supply chain issues. We have also allocated a substantial amount of money to purchase new books for the library. If you are interested in being part of this process, please contact the DEI Library subcommittee leader, Mrs. Richardson, kelli.richardson@madronetrail.org
We have also begun researching more open air covered structures for the Kinderyard and the field, which will also include bathrooms. It is very exciting what we have built so far, but it is even more exciting to know what is coming.
On a completely different note, my great grandfather emigrated from Ukraine. I grew up visiting my grandmother frequently in Charleston, South Caroline. It was not until high school that I realized pierogis were not traditional southern cuisine. I have included my grandmother’s recipe below. It is very time consuming but very worth it. Perhaps give it a go this weekend and send some love to Ukraine.

The Seven Core Principles of Waldorf Education
Founded in the early 20th century, Waldorf education is based on the insights and teachings of Rudolf Steiner. Guided by these insights, the Alliance for Public Waldorf Education has adopted Seven Core Principles for Waldorf Schools. These principles articulate the most important values that inform the policies and practices of Waldorf schools in North America and are held as a central tenet of our school.
As part of our school’s membership process to the Alliance for Public Waldorf Education, the faculty is currently participating in an extensive "self study" process, looking deeply at the Seven Core Principles of Waldorf Education and how each of those principles is living in our school. We thought we would share these with the wider school community as well. We will share one Core Principle each week in the Friday Update for you to ponder.
Principle 2: Child Development
An understanding of child development guides all aspects of the educational program, to the greatest extent possible within established legal mandates.
Human development proceeds in approximate 7-year phases. Each phase has characteristic physical, emotional, and cognitive dimensions and a primary learning orientation.
The Public Waldorf educational program, including the curriculum, teaching methodologies, and assessment methods, work with this understanding of human development to address the needs of the individual and the class in order to support comprehensive learning and healthy, balanced development.
Our developmental perspective informs how state and federal mandates, including curriculum sequence, standardized testing, and college and career readiness, are met.

From the Athletic Director
Track & Field Partnership
We are finalizing our track & field partnership with Sacred Heart. The plan is to start practicing next Thursday 3:45-5:00 pm at Spiegelberg Stadium and practice at that time Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays moving forward. Al Zeller, our music teacher, will be our track coach. Thank you so much to Mr. Zeller!
We do need parents to help with rides from Madrone Trail on those days for 10-15 athletes. Track athletes will be released at 3:15 pm.
Also, all participants will need a sport physical on file. We will have a family nurse practitioner, Sarah Roberson, available Monday, Feb. 28th at Madrone Trail. Sports physical paperwork went home this week with interested students.
Page 1 must be filled out prior to the physical. Here is the link if you need to print one at home.
Sport physicals will take place in the gym.
Schedule
6th (8:30-9:15)
7th (9:15-10)
8th (10-10:45)
Thanks everyone,
Jeff Roberson

Parking Lot Etiquette
Please remember the following during drop off and pick up:
- Drive slowly!
- Do not park in staff spots (the left row of cars as you enter the parking lot.) Please pull around and park in the back end of the lot.
- Use rainbow crosswalk or cross by the first yurt where drop off is. If you are stepping over cones and rope, you are not going the safe way!
- After dropping off students at the correct location (by the first yurt at the end of the fencing,) go all the way around the track, don't cut through field by the Gaga Ball Pit.
Thank you for keeping our parking lot safe!

Roots to Rise
~Nurturing roots to support developmental growth~
Does your child struggle with learning challenges, sensory processing issues, ADHD, ADD, balance and coordination issues, eye tracking challenges, anxiety, melt downs, sleep issues, social and emotional challenges, weakness, fatigue, speech delay, autism, food sensitivities, PTSD? When the brain and body are not working well together, challenges arise.
Roots to Rise utilizes a holistic approach to enhance a child’s learning through supporting a healthy development of the Central Nervous System and the foundational senses (Tactile, Vestibular and Proprioception).
Children can make positive gains in attention, emotional well being, academics, coordination and balance through neurodevelopmental movements (integration of reflexes) and sensory integration. Jane Higgins, the founder of Roots to Rise has trained with Nina Gallwey, a remedial teacher at the Siskiyou School. Jane taught at Madrone Trail, where she brought one class of students from first grade all the way to eighth grade.
Currently, Jane works with children one-on-one in her Roots to Rise Ashland office. Movement is brought in a playful and fun way specifically focusing on the integration of reflexes and sensory imbalances. “In my 30 years of working with children, I’ve never seen anything transform a child’s success as I have since focusing on sensory integration, and primitive and postural reflexes.”
To apply or for more information on supporting your child contact Jane Higgins at
