AmeriCorps, the federal agency for national service and volunteerism, celebrates National Volunteer Week from April 17-23 to honor the enduring contributions of volunteers and empower all Americans to make a difference. Volunteers are an essential resource in American schools and shelters, hospitals and hotlines, and civic, nonprofit, and faith-based organizations across the country.

Meet the Staff!

Colette Looney has been a native Daytonian her whole life. She grew up in Riverside within Montgomery County, but had close family in Greene County as well. She graduated from Wright State University with a Master’s of Science in Leadership Development in 2013, and has focused her career to work within Non-Profits in the Dayton Area. Colette has been an AmeriCorps RSVP Coordinator since October 2021, and has been working to connect with local organizations to establish new relationships and to adapt to Post-Covid volunteer needs of already partnered non-profits. She enjoys museums and the arts, as well as baking as a pastime. She likes to spend her time with her daughter, Addison and her nephews and Goddaughters. Her goal is to connect volunteers with roles and organizations that bring them fulfillment and sense of community.

RSVP of Crawford County partnered with the Crawford County Council on Aging to hold a Spring Senior Health Fair at the Crestline Community Center on March 23rd. We had 20 vendors in attendance from a wide variety of services, all catering to attendees over the age of 55. This was our first year for this event and we are hopeful to make it an annual occurrence based upon the positive feedback and response from all who attended.

Recently we had the pleasure of visiting with AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP volunteer, Janice, during her service at Hope Outreach Ministries in downtown Canton in Stark County. Our site partner, Pastor Marilyn, at Hope Outreach Ministries offers a variety of opportunities to give back to local residents and they are in need of additional support to better meet their mission. Volunteers are instrumental and needed to assist in the kitchen to prepare the hot meal four days a week as well as helping to sort/clean any donations that come in for their clothing room. If you know someone wanting to spend time with a great group of folks while making a difference in our community...then this is the place!!! Wyandot, Seneca & Huron

The Seneca County Board of Commissioners hosted several Seneca County RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program) volunteers during their monthly meeting.

The volunteers told stories about their service and the commissioners read a proclamation recognizing March 13-19 as AmeriCorps Week 2022.

Several volunteers shared their stories with one prevailing theme: although these volunteers don’t get paid for their time, they earn something much greater than money. They feel good about themselves, and they know they are making a difference in the community.
