The Ally: New Year, New Opportunities

Happy 2023! The start of the new year often brings thoughts of new beginnings and resolutions. I hope we can all find the right amount of inspiration in those thoughts but still be kind and gentle with our expectations of ourselves and our children. I wish all of you health, contentment and peace in the new year.

I look forward to everything we can work on together in 2023. We will share some opportunities over the next few weeks. I am very touched that 2023 begins with the opportunity to honor the memory of Jo Turlington, who I know was very dear to many of you and all of us at Families as Allies, in a special way.

The start of the new year ushers in the legislative session. My heartfelt best wishes and thanks to every legislator and your commitment to public service. Please let us know if Families as Allies can help you with policy research or supporting your constituents.

We encourage you to follow the legislative session and keep an eye on issues that affect you and your family. Remember - your voice is essential, and you have every right to share your thoughts and ideas.

You also have the opportunity to share your input about renewals on four Medicaid waivers.

Don't forget our Ninth Annual Community Partnership Celebration on January 23. There's still time to buy tickets, purchase sponsorships and invite others. Please help us share the word. Our virtual Drop-In Family Support Time is today at noon CST. All families are welcome!

I am looking forward to sharing in the new year and new opportunities with all of you. Please keep me posted on how you think we can make the most of both.

Language is a powerful tool that shapes how we see the world and other people. The words we use matter, as they have the potential to be both empowering and harmful. This is especially true for words used to describe the experiences of people living with mental illness and substance use challenges.

Anxiety rates among children have already increased over the last decade, so it's somewhat safe (and depressing) to assume those rates will keep climbing, thanks in no small part to the last three years. According to current stats, approximately 5.8 million children have anxiety.
