Virtual Dorothy Hamm MS Science Fair

Thank you for the robust response to the call for DHMS Science Fair judges. The science fair director (Elaine Kennedy) assures us that we now have enough judges signed up, and she has closed the registration Google form. If you signed up and have not yet heard from Mrs. Kennedy, please email her at elaine.kennedy@apsva.us so she can add you to the email distribution list.

Because of the pause on extracurricular activities, the science fair has been pushed back by about two weeks and has changed format. The science fair will now be virtual; students will submit a video presentation along with their project abstract. The judging window will be Tuesday, January 25th-Thursday, January 27th. Mrs. Kennedy will send out a training video to judges the weekend before the judging window opens and will assign each judge several projects to evaluate. Projects will be accessed through a Google Slideshow.

If you are interested in helping with appreciation gifts for the DHMS Science Fair participants, please contact PTSA Science Fair Lead, Carole Russo.

A Note from Dr. Glenn (Equity and Excellence Coordinator) and Ms. Schaefer (7th Grade School Counselor)

There is an opportunity that is available to 7th grade students. George Mason University runs a program called the Early Identification Program (EIP) Prep which begins in 8th grade.

The EIP Prep is designed to support students academically and personally through numerous activities and events. EIP Prep students are provided with weekly tutoring, mentoring, financial aid, goal setting, study skills, and a wide range of seminars that focus on college prep and admissions. In addition, EIP Prep students and parents attend a family seminar that focuses on family communication, advocacy, and planning for college. Students who successfully complete EIP Prep will transition into EIP for grades 9-12.
  • More information about GMU’s EIP program can be found at eip.gmu.edu
  • More information about GMU’s EIP Prep program can be found at eip.gmu.edu/eip-prep

To qualify for the EIP Prep program you must meet the following criteria:
  • Be a current 7th grade student in a participating public middle school (you are!)
  • The student’s parents MAY NOT have completed a 4-year college degree in the United States
  • Academic potential to enroll in a pre-college curriculum in high school

7th graders who are selected by GMU to participate in this program must attend a Strengthening the Family Workshop, attend weekly AMP sessions, maintain good grades, and attend EIP events while in 8th grade in order to successfully complete EIP Prep and be admitted into EIP for grades 9-12.

If you would like to be considered for the GMU EIP Prep program, please fill out the google form NO LATER THAN January 21, 2022. The link for the form is: https://forms.gle/DH1AvuZCgHBS4GZW7

If you have any questions, please see Dr. Glenn in room 118 or email her at  kamyka.glenn@apsva.us or Ms. Schaefer in room 137 or email her at carrie.schaefer@apsva.us.

Sign Up Now for Free COVID-19 Testing

APS has transitioned to CIAN Diagnostics to administer free, weekly surveillance testing for students in school – this requires a new consent form. Families are strongly encouraged to opt-in their student(s) by filling out the consent form online. Have your child’s student ID ready to complete the quick form. This is a free test administered via nasal swab in each school one day per week and helps us detect asymptomatic COVID cases early to reduce disease transmission.
