Friends and Supporters,

Next week on February 13th Richmond City Council will be voting to adopt RVA Green 2050, a climate action plan. This is the City’s plan to reduce our emissions and ensure our community can handle the effects of climate change – heat, flooding risk, etc, with particular attention to addressing the risks to more vulnerable and lower income residents. RVA Green 2050 calls for a 45% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, and strategies to adapt to the changes that are already coming.

This plan includes a number of goals and strategies to reduce and mitigate the effects of climate change, including:

  • Encouraging multi-modal transit options and safe, complete streets
  • Improving and expanding the bus transit system and bike-share options
  • Reducing the urban heat island effects of extreme heat and drought
  • Ensuring housing created using the Affordable Housing Trust Fund is located and designed to handle climate challenges including higher rainfall and heat
  • And many more!

Check out the full report or the 8-page Council Summary to learn more about the plan, the goals, and the steps towards implementation.

We encourage City of Richmond residents to email their council members asking them to vote yes to adopt this plan. You can find the contact information below.
