So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Behold the man!” - John 19:5
The scene is surreal. There is Jesus, His skin torn apart and bleeding. His head, adorned with a crown of thorns shoved into the shallow flesh on his skull, and his body draped in a purple robe. Our Lord stands next to Pilate who says “Behold, the man!”
John says, “The Word became flesh.” The Word didn’t change into flesh, morph into flesh, or transition into flesh. If that were the case, he would not be God. But Christ did become flesh, just as we are, and yet He remained who he is - God.
God in the flesh. God whose flesh is broken and torn. God who thirsts, God who bleeds, dies and is buried. He is God who cries, just like you.
Apart from Christ, we are just skin and bones with no hope. The Apostle Paul says, “Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God” (1 Corinthians 15:50). But with Christ, we have hope!
There, in front of Pilate’s palace stands Jesus, fully human. There in front of Pilate’s palace stands Jesus, fully God. There in front of Pilate’s palace stands Jesus for you.
Do you see him? There is YOUR Jesus, His skin torn apart and bleeding. His head, adorned with a crown of thorns and his body in a purple robe. Our Lord stands next to Pilate who says, “Behold, the man!”
Take a moment today and gently touch your skin and remember– Jesus did it all for you.
Jesus paid it all,
All to Him I owe;
Sin had left a crimson stain.
He washed it white as snow.
(Hymn Jesus Paid it All, Elvina M. Hall, 1854)
See you Sunday as we call our next witness, Pontius Pilate. I can’t wait!

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
2 Corinthians 9:6-7
