Why We Love This Place

Wednesday: Tera Harkema

By Terra Avilla

Tara Harkema. No, I am not just picking her to write about her because she has the best name that ever existed. I am writing about my dear friend Tara because she is a remarkable human being, who spends her time lifting others up, and doesn’t spend enough time (or really any) being in the spotlight.

I met sweet Tara through my work, and we instantly clicked. She was funny, smart, easy to talk to, the least pretentious human I have ever met.

whywelovefeatureblock image

One of those people who you meet for a couple of months, but it feels like you have known them for ages. That is just how being Tara’s friend feels. Comfortable.

My dear name twin works hard at LCC in our facilities department. However, no matter what the day brings, Tara is just always in a good mood. While Tara is dedicated to one department of the college, she knows about every program, and she is always willing to stay an extra hour or make an extra call if it will keep a student in class or help a co-worker. I know because I have seen it.

Beyond her professional life, Tara is the proud mother of three very active teenagers, Wyatt, Brayden and Addy. They are all at that season in life where they are all very busy playing sports or doing their extracurriculars.

Tara’s involvement doesn’t stop at just attending games or practices; she is deeply involved in her children’s development, providing not only the financial support (or the logistics of getting them to and fro) but also emotional and motivational support. Her presence at their events, cheering them on, no matter the outcome, speaks volumes about her as a momma.

My favorite thing about Tara is that she cheers for all the kids, not just her own. She has this wonderful mentality that it is important for kids to know that the entire community is supporting you, not just your own parental posse, so there she goes cheering for every kid on every team …and often the other team as well.

But it’s not just being a great sports momma. Tara also has a knack for the arts, and this past Broadway was there singing along with her middle son Brayden. It was an awesome moment watching Tara take the stage with her son for the Best of Broadway performance.

She has a stellar voice. She is a prime example of a humble individual with exceptional singing abilities. Me? If I sounded like Tara, I would never ever shut up. (You think I don’t quit talking now… just imagine if I had a set of pipes like my gal Harkema – everything would be sung in a ballad format.)

Tara is just a good, sweet human being, who I have been so blessed to get to know. She makes this whole busy mom lifestyle look easy, when really, it’s anything but. I appreciate her smiles and her hellos more than she knows, and I am certain I am not alone in my deduction that Tara just rocks and is one of the reasons I love where we live.

Arts Council Featuring ‘Wood

and Iron’ Show Beginning May 16th

The Lassen County Arts Council’s Wood and Iron Show is getting a well-deserved second chance with a big gallery reception May 16th, and an extended showing of the artwork at the gallery until July 20th.

“Originally, the Wood and Iron Show was set for the summer of 2021 and was only open to the public for one week before the Dixie Fire came to town,” explains Arts Council Vice President in charge of Programming, Jolene Arredondo.

“Due to the (what we know now to be historic) wildfire event, the show went through a rollercoaster of attempts to remain open for public consumption, however would eventually have to decide to close due to several contributing factors like Air Quality hazards, evacuation zones, etc.”

The show’s attendance was affected, and the show’s artists did not get the show the Council planned for.

When the Lassen County Arts Council ended up in an evacuation zone of Uptown Susanville; the Art’s Council quickly removed all show items and relocated them to a safe location for temporary storage. The show was unable to re-open again that year.

“Three years later, the Lassen County Arts Council is excited to bring this show back and give the artists the community audience, talent exposure and support they missed in 2021 and as a bonus we get to celebrate new pieces and have new artists join this unique show!”

The show features metal, iron, welding, wood, leather and silver from artists including Rob Brown, Sidney Bean, Brian Bardouski, Randle Panfilio, Russell Bates and Than King.

The reception and Chamber Mixer will be held May 16th from 5:30 to 7:30. Gallery hours for the summer are Thursdays and Fridays from 4:00 to 7:00 and Saturdays from 9:00a.m. until 4:00p.m. For more information visit the Arts Council online.

Police Department Warns Residents About Current Jury Duty Phone Scam

The Susanville Police Department is warning about scam phone calls, involving a fine for failing to attend Jury Duty, that are currently being received by area residents.

In the phone call, an individual impersonating a member of the Police Department claims that you have failed to report for jury duty, and that a fine needs to be paid to avoid arrest.

According to the SPD, law enforcement will never call to clear up legal fees or request payment over the phone.

Lassen Forest’s Post Dixie Fire

Recovery and Restoration Continues

The Lassen National Forest has begun a 30-day scoping period through June 7th, for the Dixie Postfire Restoration and Recovery Project.

In September and October of 2023, the proposed Dixie Fire Community Protection and Swain Mountain Experimental Forest Vegetation Management Project went through the public scoping process.

That proposal focused on treating areas impacted by the Dixie Fire within and around adjacent communities, including the wildland-urban interface.

Based on public scoping comments received, the Lassen National Forest reevaluated the scope of the project to assess the Dixie Fire area at a landscape level, resulting in the expansion of the project area to include most of the Dixie Fire perimeter within Lassen National Forest (excluding areas undergoing other planning efforts).

This redeveloped Proposed Action replaces the previous proposal and offers a new public scoping period.

The Dixie Postfire Restoration and Recovery Project is being planned within Almanor, Hat Creek, and Eagle Lake ranger districts of the Lassen National Forest. It proposes to implement fuels and forest health treatments and a range of proposed activities to reduce public health and safety risks and restore healthy ecosystems that are resilient to future wildfire, climate change, pests, pathogens, and other stressors.

Information about the Dixie Postfire Restoration and Recovery Project and a link to the StoryMap are available by following this link to the Forest Service’s webpage.

According to the agency, public involvement is a key element of the planning process. If you have information that you feel the Forest Service may not be aware of, or have concerns regarding this proposed action, please provide specific comments using one of the following methods.

Comments can be submitted electronically to comments-pacificsouthwest-lassen@usda.gov with the subject line “Dixie Postfire Restoration and Recovery Project” or written comments may be mailed to Kathy Allen, Forest Supervisor (Acting), 2550 Riverside Drive, Susanville, CA 96130. To be considered timely for objection purposes (36 CFR 218), and to assure your comments are fully considered during this initial phase, please submit your scoping comments by June 7th, 2024.

If you have additional questions about the Dixie Postfire Restoration and Recovery Project, or would like more information about the proposed action, please contact Jessicca McMullen at (530) 257-2151, or by email at comments-pacificsouthwest-lassen@usda.gov with the subject line “Dixie Postfire Restoration and Recovery.”

This year’s Sober Grad will be held on June 7th, and as you might imagine, a great deal of time and money goes into this event. Because of this, the Office of Education is turning to the community for help.

“Our goal is to provide a gift to every graduating senior,” explains long-time event organizer James Hall. “If you are interested in supporting Lassen County Sober Grad Night, we hope to receive either gift cards, monetary donations, or items that can be added to a gift bag.”

My wife said if I told one more joke about fruits she was going to kick me out of the house…

But where does a mango from here?
