All We Want Is More: The Tobias Wong Project

On view until July 23, 2023

In the early 2000s, Tobias Wong took the design world by storm. Born and raised in Vancouver, Wong was a brilliant and prolific artist whose career was all too short. Defying easy categorization, his work was wide ranging, pushing and dissolving disciplinary boundaries between conceptual art, performance and product design.

This exhibition is an invitation to revisit Wong’s artistic contribution with fresh eyes. Recent social, environmental and technological events have transformed the way we see the world and inevitably the way we see Tobias Wong’s work.

Neon Vancouver | Ugly Vancouver

Ready to explore a virtual space? Dive into our very popular Neon Vancouver exhibition, which was on display from October 2011 until June 2022, and discover glowing works of art online!

In the 1950s Vancouver had approximately 19,000 neon signs – more than Las Vegas! While some thought that thousands of signs signaled excitement and big city living, others thought they were a tawdry display that disfigured the city’s natural beauty. This deep civic controversy resulted in a turning point in Vancouver’s history and a change to the city’s urban landscape.

Enjoy the big city lights of Vancouver and catch a glimpse of the city from the 1950s through to the 1970s with this extraordinary collection of neon signs.

Meet Alyssa Sy de Jesus, our Program Manager at MOV!

Here at MOV, Alyssa works to develop further engagement with the exhibitions and collections through performances, talks, lunches, and workshops in support of the museum's mandates of: redress and decolonization; immigration and diversity; environment and sustainability; urban and contemporary issues.

In this position, she is grateful for the opportunity to continue learning how to better support communities in telling their stories on their own terms – especially as a form of intervention in spaces and institutions that traditionally function on colonial narratives.

Previously, Alyssa was part of MOV’s Visitor Services and Education departments. Prior to joining the team at MOV, she has worked as a cultural and community programmer for various local museums and organizations.

She holds an MA in English Literature from UBC. Her writing has been published by Chinatown Today and Living Hyphen.
