In any given community, the local health system is probably one of the biggest employers. It’s probably also one of the biggest spenders and biggest concentrations of social capital. The word for that is anchor institution, and healthcare organizations need to embrace that status in order to keep the health equity ship moving. For nearly everyone in the country, COVID-19 served as a wake-up call for health equity, or rather, what happens when health equity isn’t a priority. The pandemic drew to the forefront gaping health disparities that stemmed from a lack of investment in social determinants of health and a lack of attention to equitable outcomes across different populations.

The CMS outlined potential guidance last week on issues like healthcare equity and climate change in its final inpatient payment rule as the federal government heightens its healthcare oversight on social issues. In the report, the CMS released comments that it received after soliciting public input during its proposed rule in April. The feedback on climate change and health equity comes as organizations like the American Medical Association released policy proposals this year aimed at advocating for environmental justice and supporting workplaces that promote wearing cultural headwear and natural hairstyles. The agency in its final rule outlined the effects of climate change on patients and hospitals, citing a consensus statement signed by over 200 medical journals and calling climate change the “greatest threat to global public health of the coming century.”

Recently, our CEO and Managing Editor, Garrett Schmitt, was interviewed by one of our esteemed platinum-level exhibitors, Healthjump. "Thank you" to Healthjump for the honor of this special feature!
Value-based care (VBC) is quickly becoming the future of healthcare. By 2030, CMS expects 100% of traditional Medicare beneficiaries to be treated by a provider in a value-based care model. The objective is to improve the quality of patient care based on specific measures, such as lowering the overall cost of care, reducing hospital readmissions, providing additional preventative care services, and more. However, value-based care can still be complex and overwhelming for many people, especially those lacking a healthcare background. Fortunately, the VBC Exhibit Hall has established itself as a one-stop-shop for value-based care organizations seeking information and vendor solutions.

A new report, funded by the Department of Health and Human Services’ Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT, summarizes interviews with executives at 21 organizations involved in value-based care. The report focuses on the barriers to and facilitators of data integration in support of value-based care. Conducted by researchers at the Urban Institute and HealthTech Solutions, the report noted that interviewees identified four primary uses for data integration in value-based care: point of care, care coordination, quality measurement and reporting, and population health.
