The Railroad Workers United 9th Biennial Convention was another huge success! In addition to the necessary organizational housekeeping, highlights included the following:
Election of a fresh Steering Committee with lots of new faces for a smooth transition of leadership to younger rails while allowing RWU long-time leaders to step back from the day-to-day RWU work and enjoy their retirement.
Voting to approve the first-ever RWU dues increase to keep pace with inflation, as the $50 annual dues in 2008 is roughly equivalent to $75 in 2024, 16 years later.
Adoption of a Resolution and voiced support of the United Auto Workers (UAW) call for common contract expiration dates on May Day 2028 (see link below).
Establishing a detailed set of subcommittees to take on tasks and free up leadership and staff to do the work they do best.
Hearing from a host of experts including organizers and international railroaders and engaging in lively discussions on numerous subjects of interest to working railroaders (see the link below).
Conducting exciting receptions each evening for RWU members, Solidarity members, and hundreds of rank and file trade unionists from the Labor Notes conference.
Selling lots of RWU hats, shirts and other swag, and engaging in a number of lucrative fundraising exercises for the organization.
Generousdonations of food and libations from Dwight Hardin, Revolution Brewing and Off Color Brewing
RWU members take part in one of a dozen workshops at the 8th biennial Convention.
Highlights from the Labor Notes Conference
Once the RWU Convention adjourned Friday evening, most of the participants stayed on for the weekend of Labor Notes activities where we were joined by more than 4000 mostly young trade union activists from around the country. See the highlights below.
