New Norad Commander Wants More U.S. Troops Training in Canadian Arctic

American troops will be spending more time training in the Far North, the new commander of Norad says, a strategy that fits “hand-in-glove” with Canada’s renewed focus on Arctic defense. U.S. Gen. Gregory Guillot took over command of the binational North American Aerospace Defense Command in February.

Warming Arctic Reduces Dust Levels in Parts of the Planet

Dust can have a huge impact on local air quality, food security, energy supply and public health. Previous studies have found that dust levels are decreasing across India, particularly northern India, the Persian Gulf Coast and much of the Middle East, but the reason has remained unclear. Researchers found that the decrease in dust can be attributed to the Arctic warming much faster than the rest of the planet, a phenomenon known as Arctic amplification. This process destabilizes the jet stream and changes storm tracks and wind patterns over the major sources of dust in West and South Asia.

Technology Can Detect wildfires. Do Humans Still Have To?

After seven seasons working as a fire lookout — someone who watches for wildfires from a tower — near Peace River, Alta., Trina Moyles has witnessed some of the worst wildfire seasons Canada has seen. "It's especially stressful when communities are threatened by fires and you can visibly see the wall of fire advancing," said Moyles. She's a journalist, photographer and creative producer who has published a memoir about her experience there, titled Lookout.

Tire Toxicity Faces Fresh Scrutiny After Salmon Die-Offs

For decades, concerns about automobile pollution have focused on what comes out of the tailpipe. Now, researchers and regulators say, we need to pay more attention to toxic emissions from tires as vehicles roll down the road. At the top of the list of worries is a chemical called 6PPD, which is added to rubber tires to help them last longer. When tires wear on pavement, 6PPD is released. It reacts with ozone to become a different chemical, 6PPD-q, which can be extremely toxic — so much so that it has been linked to repeated fish kills in Washington state.

New Alaska Research Projects Focus on Climate Change, Mercury and Workforce Development

Four new research projects selected for funding in a University of Alaska Anchorage program will address some of the most pressing problems facing the state: climate change, marine ecosystem health and losses in the labor force. The projects, each designed to run for two years, were winners in an annual competition that uses an endowment created from a $15 million donation ConocoPhillips made in 2008 to UAA, the university said.

Two New US Arctic Observing Network Publications

The US Arctic Observing Network (US AON) is happy to share two recent publications! The US AON Accomplishments Report documents the achievements of the federal US AON Board and partnered activities over the past two years. Arctic Observation Storylines: River Watch shows how observing system inputs feed through data products into the River Watch program and services to provide societal benefits. Made in partnership with the NOAA-NWS River Watch team, it documents key takeaways including the critical value of community partnership, opportunities to improve hydrological models, and strengths and gaps in the underlying observing system. Please reach out to Sandy Starkweather (sandy.starkweather@noaa.gov) or Hazel Shapiro (hazel@iarpccollaborations.org) with questions or visit usaon.org to learn more.
