Team BCPS celebrates Black History Month

BCPS celebrates Black history year-round; however, the month of February affords us a special opportunity to explore and elevate this integral aspect of American history.

In addition to various school-based activities throughout the month, 20 elementary schools and nine middle schools are participating in the systemwide Black Excellence Program, which teaches students about the Black experience in America. The program will conclude with a systemwide public event at Loch Raven High School on Saturday, February 25, from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. The event will showcase presentations students from each school developed in response to the books they read or their independent research.

The BCPS Offices of English Language Arts and Social Studies are co-sponsoring a Black History Month Writing Contest for all students in Grades K–12. All entries must be submitted by Friday, February 10. Prizes for winners will be provided by The Education Foundation of BCPS. Students are encouraged to ask their English language arts and social studies teachers for additional information.

The BCPS Instagram account (@teambcps) will highlight a Black BCPS graduate every school day, and, on Tuesdays, it will feature Black History Month Trivia.

Be on the lookout for stories about Career and Technical Education throughout the month

February is Career and Technical Education Month, and BCPS is highlighting CTE programs.

A new BCPS-TV video showcases Bella Seergae, who participated in the culinary arts CTE program at Sollers Point Technical High School, and who is now studying baking and pastry at Johnson & Wales University in Rhode Island.

from The Education Foundation of BCPS

The heart of the HUB:

Celebrating the foundation's interns

Each year, the Education Foundation of Baltimore County Public Schools interviews and selects a BCPS student to serve as a student intern, working alongside the headquarters staff and volunteers to learn and grow as they look forward to graduation and the next steps of their life’s journey. This school year, Macie Burnham, a senior at Chesapeake High School, is the heart of the foundation’s HUB – the Exchangeree: Gizmos and Gadgets Galore in Rosedale/Golden Ring, one of the two collaborative educator resource centers for BCPS educators.

A new Mission Moment blog post describes how Macie contributes to the foundation and what she has gained as an intern. The post also celebrates Education Foundation interns since 2012.

A Word from Dr. Williams, Superintendent

February 6, 2023

Dear Team BCPS,

The new Baltimore County Public Schools’ Employee and Retiree Customer Service Center began providing services on February 1. The center provides BCPS employees and retirees with assistance and solutions to questions regarding benefits, retirement, leaves, certification, and payroll.

The center can be reached at 443-809-1000 or cschelp@bcps.org. Its service hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, from 8:30 a.m. – 4:45 p.m., and Tuesday and Thursday, from 8:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.

I am so pleased that, through this center, we will be able to provide a higher level of service to our valued BCPS employees and retirees. The center is just one of many efforts our administration has established to better support employees and retirees.

Sincerely,

Darryl L. Williams, Ed.D.

Superintendent
