The ICAA’s mission of recovering a building design language and its craft has been reinforced by the parallel focus on traditional urban design of the New Urbanism. New Urban communities have provided a welcoming context for traditional architecture, extending its influence beyond the individual building to the creation of a sense of place. This presentation by Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk illustrates this mutual reinforcement, and its adaptation to contemporary concerns of sustainability and resilience.

Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk is a founding principal of DPZ CoDesign, and the Malcolm Matheson Distinguished Professor of Architecture at the University of Miami where she directs the Master in Urban Design Program, after 18 years as dean of the School of Architecture. Plater-Zyberk is a founder of the Congress for the New Urbanism, an organization established in 1993 to promote walkable, resilient urban design.
This panel, featuring Krupali Krusche, Peter Talty, and Stephen James, and moderated by Eric Osth, explores issues facing three contexts: an expanding metropolis, a town that is a victim of its success, and an agricultural context that will be overrun with sprawl. Each of these contexts has challenges, and this panel explores how traditional architecture and urbanism are impacting the evolution of places in a timeless fashion.

Stephen James serves as Chief Visioning Officer for Larry H. Miller Real Estate, Eric Osth serves as Chairman and Principal-in-Charge on urban design and architecture projects at Urban Design Associates, Peter Talty is Vice President & Director of Properties at Belvedere Property Management, and Krupali Krusche is an Associate Professor and Director of DHARMA (Digital Historic Architectural Research and Material Analysis).
NEWS: ANNOUNCING A NEW SERIES
Announcing the Richard H. Jenrette Preservation Series

The ICAA is pleased to announce the establishment of the Richard H. Jenrette Preservation Series, thanks to a generous grant from the Richard Hampton Jenrette Foundation (formerly Classical American Homes Preservation Trust) advancing the Foundation's vision for a new era for preservation, innovation, and education of America's historic architecture, decorative arts, and landscapes.

The series will support expanded programming focused on historic preservation and building craft. Programming will be developed in conjunction with the Foundation, and include lectures and original content featuring leading architects and preservationists, site visits to historic properties, courses and lectures focused on the language and methodologies of preservation, and so much more. Additionally the Richard Hampton Jenrette Foundation is supporting both the 2024 Summer Studio in Classical Architecture and the 2025 Intensive in Classical Architecture in New York, allowing for scholarships, housing stipends, teaching assistant support, and more.

The ICAA is grateful to the Foundation for their generous support, and we look forward to announcing upcoming lectures and programs as part of the series.

Drawing on his recent book Increments of Neighborhood: A Compendium of Built Types for Walkable and Vibrant Communities, Moderator Brian O’Looney, along with fellow panelists Michael Watkins, Daniel J. Doyle, and Robert J. Turner, explores the challenges of and opportunities in creating a variety of building types and sizes to meet housing and development demands, while still producing beautiful and desirable buildings and spaces, that are responsive to the local historic context and tradition.

The conference's second breakout session was led by Gary Brewer, former partner at Robert A.M. Stern Architects, and Winslow Hastie, President & CEO of Historic Charleston Foundation, and focused on Charleston’s Historic District and the process of how historic designs are reviewed and approved by the city’s Board of Architectural Review. Highlighted case studies included three types of buildings: traditional, transitional, and modern, that have gone through the historic review process.
