BICENTENNIAL KICKOFF WENT SWIMMINGLY WELL

The Town of Mina’s Bicentennial Open House/Kickoff and Special Celebratory Town Board Meeting held this past Saturday at the Findley Lake Fire Hall went swimmingly well. Held on the exact date (April 27th) of the first Mina Town Board meeting 200 years prior, there were approximately 150 in attendance. A highlight of the event was the debut of the Bicentennial mascot, “Swanee the Swan” (Becky Faulkner) who winters in Florida and migrates back to Findley Lake each year. She spent much of this past winter preparing and preening her plumage (approximately 250 feathers) so that her debut as a swan fashionista would impress all of the pens and cobs (female & male swans). She graciously had her picture taken with all who requested and did not complain once about the paparazzi.

The whimsical swans being sold as a fundraiser by the Findley Lake & Mina Historical Society were also a crowd pleaser. The swans were each handcrafted by various sewers/quilters as a memento of the Bicentennial. Each one is a creative masterpiece and they are now available for sale on Saturday mornings at the Society’s Heritage Room in the Mina-Findley Lake Community Center.

Another feature of the event was the Findley Lake Volunteer Fire Department’s new rescue boat that was on display outside the fire hall.

The Town Board held a Special Celebratory Town Board Meeting at exactly 2:00 pm to celebrate 200 years of Town government. As part of the meeting, the Town Board passed a resolution encouraging the community to support the Bicentennial, an important milestone in the history of the Town.

The Findley Lake & Mina Historical Society reminds everyone that the official Town of Mina Bicentennial T-Shirts are on sale for a limited time only (see information below). Hurry, the sale has been extended for a few days but is ending shortly.

The Town Board appreciated the participation at the Kickoff of the many local nonprofits who serve our community and make the Town of Mina a special place to live. Those organizations at the Kickoff included:

  • Alexander Findley Community Library
  • Community Connections at Findley Lake
  • FLAIR (Findley Lake Artists in Residence)
  • Findley Lake Church
  • Findley Lake Community Foundation
  • Findley Lake Forward
  • Findley Lake & Mina Historical Society
  • Findley Lake Nature Trails Network
  • Findley Lake Volunteer Fire Department
  • Findley Lake Watershed Foundation
  • The Camp at Findley
  • Town of Mina Parks & Recreation Committee

Mark your calendars for the Bicentennial Weekend Celebration to be held on Friday, August 9th, Saturday, August 10th and Sunday, August 11th. A flyer will be coming out shortly with the various activities for those three days.

TOWN OF MINA SELECTED TO RECEIVE TRAINING ON FEDERAL FUNDING

The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), Washington, D.C., announced that the Town of Mina is one of 90 local government entities, representing 12 Appalachian states, that were selected to participate in a no-cost training through the READY Appalachia, READY Local Governments Initiative. The program is designed to help participants leverage federal funding opportunities and create lasting, positive change in their communities.

The ARC is an economic development entity of the federal government and 13 state governments focusing on 423 counties across the Appalachian Region.

The program consists of nine weeks of virtual, cohort-based learning to grow skills in project identification and planning, federal grant application development, federal grant regulations and compliance, community engagement in projects, and more. Following completion of the training program, participants will be eligible to apply for up to $50,000 in funding (no-match required) to implement internal capacity-building projects to help better serve their communities.

Participants representing the Town of Mina are Rebecca Brumagin, Town Supervisor and Johanna D’Angelo, Program Director for Community Connections at Findley Lake.
