Young Hands, Eternal Impact

"Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it." (Mark 10:15-16)

I am reminded of Sondra Furedy, our former Volunteer Coordinator, who shared with me a profound insight before her departure: "I see the face of Jesus in our neighbors and his hands and feet in our volunteers." These words have resonated with me ever since. At Living Stones, this sentiment is vividly manifested every time we engage in service. Recently, I have been particularly moved by the dedication of our youth volunteers. Not only do they embody the hands and feet of Jesus through their service, but they also exemplify his compassion, love, and leadership.

Today, it's common to observe children and teenagers engrossed in screens, swiftly absorbing vast amounts of information. Alternatively, they may be deeply engaged in sports, consuming much of their non-school hours, leading families to be less involved in community activities like church attendance and volunteering. Nevertheless, at Living Stones, we're fortunate to have a handful of youth volunteers who challenge this trend, choosing to spend their weekends serving and spreading joy to our neighbors.

Harrison stands as one of our dedicated youth volunteers. Over the past year or so, he and his family have faithfully delivered bread and desserts to our Brentwood serving location each month. Upon arrival, Harrison wastes no time. He assists his parents in unloading boxes of baked goods and promptly dons gloves to begin his tasks (which he needs no direction on). With precision and care, he meticulously separates bakery breads into individual bags for our neighbors to take home. Once completing that task, Harrison transitions seamlessly to the dessert table, and always lends a hand in plating sweet treats alongside fellow volunteers. His commitment is truly inspiring; willingly sacrificing his Sundays, which could otherwise be spent with friends or pursuing personal interests. What's truly touching is the tender care he exhibits in every task. Whether delicately placing cakes on plates or ensuring they remain upright for the best presentation, Harrison's dedication shines through. It's evident he serves with a genuine heart, striving to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others.

Similarly, at our Dormont serving location, Keanan dedicates one Sunday each month to assisting with the setup and cleanup of our dining hall. Despite having an occasional soccer game scheduled for a Sunday afternoon, Keanan and his family consistently arrive early to volunteer, demonstrating their unwavering commitment. Keanan eagerly pitches in, helping arrange tables, chairs, and place settings, and offering assistance wherever needed. He exhibits remarkable leadership qualities at such a young age, confidently taking charge alongside adults. His voice often guides the setup efforts, as he directs fellow volunteers with clear instructions. I once playfully remarked, "I think we've found our next Executive Director!" to which Keanan responded with a proud smile, "I don't think I'm ready for that just yet." It's evident that Keanan is a natural born leader, utilizing his skills to serve and advance the mission of Living Stones. Despite his involvement in sports and having his own personal interests, he consistently prioritizes service, benefiting both our organization and our neighbors with his compassionate heart.

Lastly, Amelia, a remarkable teenager who, despite having her share of teenage priorities, also dedicates one Sunday each month to serving at our Dormont location. Not only does she faithfully attend every month, but she also extends her impact by bringing a different friend along each time, introducing them to the joy of service and the needs of our community. Amelia's warmth and enthusiasm are evident as she greets and engages with each person in line, serving meals with a genuine smile. Recently, her kindness took on a new level of generosity when she discovered a grant opportunity to purchase reusable bags for our neighbors. Taking the initiative, Amelia applied for the grant independently, securing it to provide our community with bags for their daily use. Her selfless act surprised and deeply touched both us and our neighbors. It's clear to everyone at Living Stones, volunteers and neighbors alike, that Amelia, Harrison, and Keanan exemplify what it means to build God's kingdom. They willingly set aside their own desires on weekends to wholeheartedly serve God's children, embodying the spirit of compassion and selflessness.

They are indeed shining examples for many of us to admire. Their young hands have left a significant mark, while their compassionate hearts continue to make an even greater one.

Living Stones fosters the cultivation of relationships with neighbors who join us for meals. As relationships develop and deepen, Living Stones volunteers come alongside those individuals and families to assist them in navigating the challenges in their lives and encourage them to find hope in Christ as they learn to trust Him.
