PRINCIPAL'S DESK

May 3, 2024

Greetings tiger Students and Families,

Teacher and Staff Appreciation week is next week, so I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to the incredible educators and staff who dedicate themselves to shaping our futures. Your passion, dedication, and unwavering support do not go unnoticed. In a world where guidance is invaluable, you serve as models of knowledge and inspiration, guiding students towards their goals and nurturing their potential. Your commitment to fostering growth, both academically and personally, leaves an incredible mark on each student’s life. Your kindness and encouragement create a nurturing environment where students can thrive. Nex week, we celebrate you and all that you do for our kids, each other, our school, and community. Thank you for your tireless efforts, your patience, and your belief in the abilities of every kid. You make a difference every single day and for that, I am forever grateful. Here’s to you, the heart and soul of our educational community. I appreciate you more than words can express.

A few reminders:

  • Campus is closed during school hours. Students are to always remain on campus unless they have a parent or guardian excusing them out of school for an appointment.
  • As we get closer to the end of the school year, students should work to resolve any fines and fees which can be paid in the Business Office.
  • We encourage all students to give their best effort every day. Be present, be on time, complete all assignments on time, and always ask for help when needed.

Thank you for your partnership and support. Whenever needed, please email me at ivanc@spokaneschools.org or call me at (509) 354-6888.

With gratitude,

Mr. Ivan Corley

INFORMATION & UPDATES

AP Exams Schedule

AP Exams are scheduled for Monday, May 6 to Friday, May 17. All exams will be at LC, room assignments will be available closer to the exams. Morning check-in is 7:30am and 11:30am for afternoon exams (NOT 8:00am and 12:00pm). Students taking exams will be excused from classes during the exam times so there will be no need to call in.

All exams will be at LC - click here to download the room assignments (we will also be distributing these at lunch in the Commons and in the Public/Student Offices).

This is a national exam schedule, if you have a conflict, see Mrs. Meyer ASAP in the Public Office. College Board has very strict rules regarding test scheduling that need to be arranged in advance (there may be a late testing fee).

Prepare for your exams by using your AP Classroom account. Most exams will have new practice questions available every day.

What to bring:

  • Picture ID is REQUIRED! LC or Driver’s License - have ready at check-in.
  • Pens (blue or black) - all exams require a pen!
  • Pencils (sharpened - no sharpener in the room) - No.2 only, not mechanical.
  • Laptop (fully charged w/power cord and Bluebook installed for these digital exams: Computer Science Principles, English Language & Lit, Euro History, Seminar, US History, World History, and African American Studies.
  • For the French, Spanish, & Music Theory exams you must have Audacity installed on your laptop. Bring headphones with microphone (we can provide if you don’t have one).
  • An approved calculator for math/science exams & extra batteries.
  • A straightedge (only for Physics).
  • Snacks and water for breaks - must be in a CLEAR plastic bag and remain on the floor during the exam.
  • Sweatshirt/jacket in case the room is cold.

What NOT to bring:

  • NO cell phones, smartwatches, or any other electronics. If you bring these, you WILL turn them in as soon as you walk in the room, but it will be more efficient if you leave them at home.
  • Textbooks, scratch paper, dictionaries, notes, colored pencils, or highlighters.
  • The room space is limited, so avoid bringing bags and backpacks if at all possible.

Suggestions for Success:

  • Know your testing location. If you arrive after the test begins, you cannot enter.
  • Do not stay up late and cram the night before the test, relax - you have prepared for an entire year. Getting a good night’s sleep is worth more than a few hours of crazed studying.
  • Eat a good breakfast and drink plenty of fluids to stay energized. You can eat and drink during the break, but you cannot eat or drink during the test.
  • If you have a commitment after the test, we cannot release you until the testing period is officially over (even if you finish your test early). Generally, morning tests will end no sooner than 11:30am and afternoon tests around 3:30pm

Graduation Expectations

Graduation is a time of celebration and excitement not only for you but for your family and friends.

We know that in that excitement you might want to express yourself in a unique way but understand that expectations on behavior are strictly enforced and non-compliance will result in your high school diploma being held pending an in-person meeting with you, your parent/guardians, Principal Corley, and Superintendent Dr. Adam Swinyard.

Click here to see the PowerPoint from the Senior Class Meeting on Monday

Decorating Caps

Students are allowed to personalize and decorate their caps for graduation (Caps and Gowns will be distributed on May 21 at lunch). Here are the guidelines:

  • Decorations must be school appropriate - NO references to drugs, alcohol, violence, innuendo, etc. This is a formal event about the entire class of 2024, not just individuals.
  • Decorations must fit on the cap - flush with your cap and not over the edges
  • NO GLITTER! (strict Podium rule).
  • Any caps deemed inappropriate at Graduation will be denied and you will need to wear a loaner cap.
  • If you have questions about your design, see Mr. Corley or Mrs. Meyer.

Graduation Honors

At graduation, all Spokane Public Schools use the Latin Honors system to honor our top graduates. This system recognizes the top students using weighted grade point averages. Students have the ability to get three different levels of recognition: Summa Cum Laude (4.3 weighted GPA and above), Magna Cum Laude (4.1-4.299 weighted GPA), and Cum Laude (3.8-4.099 weighted GPA) - GPAs will not be rounded up. These are the same designations that colleges across the nation use to recognize top students. Latin Honors will be based on all high school credits through the end of 1st semester.

Weighted grades are calculated by providing higher points for grades earned in Honors courses and still higher points for grades earned in AP courses:

  • Unweighted Courses: A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0
  • Honors Courses: A=4.5, B=3.5, C=2.5, D=1.5, F=0
  • AP Courses: A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, F=0
  • Because SPS uses a +/- grading scale, the above table is only a sampling of options. The easiest way for students to calculate the weighted grade point average is to add .5 to the GPA for honors classes and a 1.0 for Advanced Placement classes.

FAFSA/WASFA Is Open

Here's why completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WASFA) is essential:

🌟 Funding Access:

  • FAFSA is open, providing access to federal aid, including grants, work-study, and loans. U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and eligible non-citizens
  • WASFA opens avenues to state financial aid for non-citizens, including undocumented students, who can't complete FAFSA. It's for those without a Social Security Number but meeting Washington State residency requirements.

🎓 Scholarship Gateways:

  • Numerous scholarships hinge on FAFSA or WASFA completion.

💡 Institutional Aid Eligibility:

  • FAFSA details may determine eligibility for coveted institutional aid.

🚀 Early Advantage:

  • Apply early for priority consideration; some aid operates on a first-come, first-served basis.

💰 Financial Insight:

  • Examine your family's financial landscape for personalized aid packages.
  • FAFSA opens doors to affordable federal student loans.

💼 Work-Study Prospects:

  • The FAFSA paves the way for work-study programs, marrying work experience with financial support.

How to Begin:

LC Alumni of Distinction

We are in the process of choosing our alumni of distinction for next year. If you think any former students would be good nominees for this or future years, please click this link and let us know.

Our goal is to have students look at the alumni and see a possible future version of themselves, so please consider these criteria.

  1. Please nominate people who are still living.
  2. Please nominate people from all stages of life - last year, we honored one alum who is still in his 20s, and another who is still in her 30s.
  3. Please consider a wide range of accomplishments, from politics to business to the arts to sports to law to science. There are many ways to excel in this world!
  4. Please consider alumni from diverse backgrounds. We would like all of our students to be able to see themselves reflected in our alumni.
