THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING

SUNSHINE VILLAGE!

As we celebrate our 56th year of providing high quality services for people with disabilities and people on the autism spectrum, we are successfully rebuilding Sunshine Village day by day. We are pleased to share with you all that we are doing – and if you would like more information about what we do – please visit our website (you can see our programs through our virtual tours) at www.sunshine.us

or call us for an in person visit!

Unfortunately, because of the on-going impact of the Workforce Crisis / Shortage, we are not able to welcome back everyone – or even accept all new referrals. We are trying our best to rebuild – during very difficult circumstances. The Board of Directors is discussing all of the issues that are creating challenges for Sunshine Village – including transportation – as part of our Strategic Planning process – which is currently underway. We appreciate your understanding during this trying time – and thank you for your continued support.

GOODWILL / COMMUNITY OUTREACH / DEVELOPMENT

April is Autism Awareness Month: SSV will be helping to promote both awareness and acceptance with many initiatives this year as the world celebrates Autism Awareness Day on April 2nd - with this year’s theme being “accept * understand * love.” We will be visiting local libraries and with First Responders – and we will be “painting” the Chicopee Mayor’s Hallway blue! Join us at one of the planned Flag Raisings!

Golf TournamentOur golf roster is full! We are looking forward to a GREAT day of golf at the Chicopee Country Club on August 2, 2023. Sponsorships are still available to support the one fundraising event hosted by Sunshine Village.

Promotion! Starting in April, watch WWLP Channel 22 or The CW – for Sunshine Village commercials! We are sharing the message that GREAT days begin at SSV!

STRATEGIC PLANNING: Sunshine Village is planning for our future! The Board of Directors is looking at input from many stakeholders – and reviewing our MISSION and will be refining our VISION STATEMENT. They will also assess our ORGANIZATIONAL GOALS – and then management will work to develop strategies, objectives and performance metrics to achieve high levels of success. At present, it is looking like we will be moving forward with a one-year plan for Fiscal Year 2024 – and we will share it with you in a future eNewsletter.

SERVICESWe continue working on our Inclusion efforts – and helping our clients to engage in our community.

CONGRATULATIONS to

Austin Coelho

who recently graduated from the culinary program at Holyoke Community College.

Michelle, Jean Paul and Charlie participated in the OT “SCOT” winter camp at Springfield College and had an amazing time!

Many of our clients in our CBDS programs volunteer at local charities and with municipalities to gain skills as they work toward their first job – or a better job.

Bringing the Community to Us is a great way for our clients in our Day Habilitation sited programs to engage with artists and wellness professionals.

Mad Science Monday – an activity that was requested by a few of our clients – is now being enjoyed by so many!

REGULATORY REVIEW:

OQE: The Department of Developmental Services Office of Quality Enhancement (OQE) visited Sunshine Village in February – and reported at an exit meeting in mid- March that the organization has achieved a two-year lisence, with a score of 94%. The report highlights that SSV "demonstrated effective oversite systems in the area of enviromental safety , promotion of human rights, assistive technology and workforce competency."

CARFThe Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) will be surveying Sunshine Village on March 21, 22 and 23. We invited the surveyors to evaluate how well we meet international standards for quality. The survey will tell us what we are doing well and ways we might improve.  As part of the survey, the surveyors will interview people who receive services, their families, our staff, and others. Some questions the survey team members might ask people are: • Do we provide a clean and safe setting? • Do you receive the services you need and want? • Are you treated with respect? • Do you take part in planning your services? • Are you told what you need to know about your services? • Are your questions answered in a way you understand? • Do you know where to go with questions or concerns?

If you would like to talk with one of the survey team members or want to learn more about CARF International, please let one of our staff members know. You may also contact CARF International directly. • Internet: www.carf.org/contact-us - Email: feedback@carf.org • Mail: CARF International, 6951 East Southpoint Road, Tucson, AZ 85756 • Toll-free telephone: (866) 510-2273 / Fax: (520) 318-1129

We will provide an update of the survey in our next eNewsletter.

HUMAN RESOURCES:

We have several DSP positions that are open – and we are now also recruiting for one driver and a float RN. SSV has worked very hard to make the organization an “Employer of Choice” – but the workforce shortage continues to create challenges.   If you know someone who would like to have GREAT days while helping people SHINE – ask them to check out our website at www.sunshine.us.

Our NEXT Appreciation Bonus: In 2022, we gave out over $7,000 in bonus money to all staff, including DSPs. We have another bonus planned - $1,500 to be given out to active employees on June 30, 2023 (and $750 for new employees who join us between January 15th and June29th)

Corporate Compliance and Ethics: We strengthened our Employee Code of Ethics by developing a HOT LINE for any complaints and incorporating it into posting on our Informational Bulletin Boards.

PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT:

The results are in from some of our Stakeholder Surveys. Results, analysis, and potential initiatives will be incorporated in the agency’s 2023 Bi-annual Performance Management System report and posted on the website…but here are some highlights!
