Upcoming Celebration: May 5, 2024

Hey there party people! 🎈 Mark your calendars for May 5, 2024, as we gear up for an epic celebration at New Day Lutheran. We'll officially be an ELCA congregation for 5 years, and we want YOU to join in on the fun! 🎉 Get ready to dive into the history of New Day with an oral and pictorial presentation by Mary Johnson and Cherie Stevens, enjoy a delicious taco bar, and support our youth fundraiser. But hey, we can't do it alone - we need your memories, raffle basket donations, and volunteers to make this fiesta a success! 🌟 Will you share your stories at the party, donate items for our raffle baskets, or sign up to assist with set-up and clean-up?! Let's make this celebration one for the books! 🎊 Contact church@newdaylutheran.org or reach out to Pastor Ann via email or cell phone to get involved. See you there! 🎈

Can I win if I am not present?

Yes! Your name can be put on the tickets. You can pick up your prize later.

Is there a cost for the meal?

It is a free will offering for the meal. Give from the heart!

Do I need to bring food?

Nope! Unless you received a call from Theresa and know you are to bring something, there is no need for anyone to bring food for anything Sunday. We have it all covered via a Thrivent Grant!

When should I bring my donation items?

You can bring items anytime during office hours this week, which would be best. Or you can even bring items Sunday morning.

What is the schedule of activities?

  • During our fellowship time we will have chips and salsa while we listen to a presentation on our history, and a presentation on Luther Heights. This is so we can give St. Luke's time to do their worship and join us for the meal and raffles.
  • At noon we will serve up food
  • 1pm we will draw raffles to wrap things up.
  • 2pm we want to be able to walk out the door!

Do you need setup/cleanup help?

We really want this to be as hands off as possible for members so they can just enjoy the event. That said, we won't say no! The committee does have several people setting up on Sunday starting at 8am. We are hoping those left at the end would help with basic cleanup stuff.

SEE YOU THERE!

Bible Study

1 Corinthians 13:1-3

13 If I speak in the tongues of humans and of angels but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 And if I have prophetic powers and understand all mysteries and all knowledge and if I have all faith so as to remove mountains but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give away all my possessions and if I hand over my body so that I may boast but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Mark 12:28-31

28 One of the scribes came near and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well he asked him, “Which commandment is the first of all?” 29 Jesus answered, “The first is, ‘Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; 30 you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

Questions:

  • What kind of power do you believe love has?
  • How are some people, including us, sometimes just a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal?
  • How do we love when it’s hard to do so?
  • Why do you think it says that there is no greater commandment than to love?

Luke 24: 13-35 The Road to Emmaus

13 Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, 14 and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15 While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, 16 but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17 And he said to them, “What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?” They stood still, looking sad. 18 Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days?” 19 He asked them, “What things?” They replied, “The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and crucified him. 21 But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place. 22 Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning, 23 and when they did not find his body there they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive. 24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see him.” 25 Then he said to them, “Oh, how foolish you are and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared! 26 Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?” 27 Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures.

28 As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were going on. 29 But they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over.” So he went in to stay with them. 30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him, and he vanished from their sight. 32 They said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?” 33 That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem, and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. 34 They were saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!” 35 Then they told what had happened on the road and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread.

Questions:

  • What do we hope for in Christ?
  • Where are the places that Christ has been present that surprised you?
  • When have you missed seeing the presence of Jesus and not realized until later?
  • What has your Emmaus Road looked like?

Blessings, Pastor Ann.

This past Sunday's service in case you missed it!

What "month" is it?

I've been trying to call our attention to various ways we can be aware of those around us, such as Black History Month, Volunteer Month, and Women's History Month. There are several things we can call our attention to this month: Asian American & Pacific Islanders, Haitian Heritage, Jewish American Heritage, Mental Health Awareness, and National Military Appreciation. This week, let's be mindful of the various mental health issues that people face. Here's an opportunity to learn... This was shared by Pastor Christy from Jason Lee Memorial United Methodist Church in Blackfoot...

Summer Food Service Program does not have a sponsor and summer lunch funding was turned down by the Idaho Legislature. Community Food Basket will try to take up some of the slack with food bags of individual kid friendly foods given to families during the summer. CFB is asking for donations specific for that program and also for volunteers to help fill the bags and distribute them.

You can bring egg cartons to church and we will make sure they get them.
