LaGuardia Receives Federal Funding to Expand Vocational Training for Underemployed

LaGuardia will receive financial support from U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, U.S. Representative Nydia Velázquez, and former U.S. Representative Carolyn B. Maloney, to enhance vocational training for underemployed New Yorkers. LaGuardia is one of 144 colleges selected for funding from the U.S. Departments of Education, Labor and Health and Human Services, across 163 projects. With the new funding, LaGuardia’s Continuing Education Division will purchase the latest, industry-standard equipment and upgrade existing labs for accelerated professional trainings in Electrical, Plumbing, and Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC). Training programs will be open to unemployed and underemployed individuals who are low-income, formerly incarcerated, veterans, homeless, disconnected youth, TANF or SNAP recipients, those who lack a high school diploma or equivalent and those with limited English proficiency.

John Bahia Seeks Positive Change Through Community Involvement

Liberal Arts: Social Science and Humanities major John Bahia felt compelled to get involved in his community after witnessing the challenges of his neighbors during the COVID-19 pandemic. John began seeking roles in community organizing and was hired as a community affairs associate at a local non-profit, Woodside on the Move/ Youth on the Move. Last year he learned about an opportunity to join his local community board, Queens CB2, he applied and was thrilled to be appointed. Serving on Queens CB2 is proving to be a valuable educational venue for his interest in community organizing. “I find the meetings very informative,” John said. “Through hearing reports from district elected officials like Councilmember Julie Won, I’m learning about the intersections of what they do and how young people can get involved. And it’s inspiring to hear members of the community, who attend the meetings, speak up when something affects themselves or their family.” John is on track to graduate from LaGuardia in June and plans to continue his studies here in New York; he hopes to eventually work in nonprofit or government as a policy advocate or in community organizing.

Professor Bijoyeta Das Documents Student Experiences of the Pandemic

An essay written by Bijoyeta Sahoriya Das, assistant professor of English and director of the Liberal Arts: Journalism Option, titled “Teaching Journalism in the Era of Doomscrolling,” was published recently in Radical Teacher, a journal produced by the University of Pittsburgh. The essay is a distillation of interviews Professor Das conducted with LaGuardia journalism majors about how reading the news regularly—something she requires of her students—affected them during the COVID-19 pandemic. The students described having to actively fight against the temptation to doomscroll, that is, to continuously browse through bad news. Doomscrolling was named one of Oxford English Dictionary’s 2020 words of the year.

Professor Das holds a master’s in journalism from Northeastern University; a post graduate diploma in photojournalism from Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines; and a bachelor’s from St. Stephen’s College in Delhi, India. Before joining LaGuardia in 2019, Professor Das spent more than a decade reporting for Al Jazeera, Radio France Internationale, WAMC Radio, and other news outlets around the world. She has also worked in South Sudan developing independent media.

Currently, Professor Das is working with LaGuardia journalism students to relaunch The Bridge, the student newspaper, following a three-year hiatus spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic, as a faculty advisor. In addition, she is working towards a Master of Fine Arts in cinematography at the Barry R. Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema at Brooklyn College.
