How Behavioural Biases Impact Investment Decisions

Bastian Verdel
Managing Partner, StraightOne GmbH

Bastian Verdel is the Managing Partner of StraightOne GmbH and a member of the board of the BVM (German Market Research Association). Based on his Dutch origin he once started studying marketing & research to better understand why people buy flowers and how you could sell more of these. But soon found out that understanding and researching the decision-making behavior of people was his true ambition. For over 20 years he has been researching and advising organizations on human behaviour in different contexts. Be it the human being as consumer, patient, doctor, investor, or B2B decision-maker. He founded Blauw Research in Germany in 2006 and since 2017 teams up with his wife Michaela and founded StraightONE a research and consultancy agency that focuses on explaining the often fuzzy and complex customer behavior in a straight–understandable way and coaching companies to act upon these insights. Together they developed the Customer Understanding Modell a framework to decode the drivers and barriers of customer behavior. They combine the science of behavioral economics with good research practice and design thinking tools to bridge the gap of understanding between customers and organisations. In the last few years, they have had a strong focus on decisions that strongly involve Present Bias, Risk Perception, and Loss Aversion like Sustainable Behavior, Financial & Investment Behavior, or Data Protection Behavior. He has worked among others with ING, Teambank, Ikea, Mc Donald's, Lufthansa, Tui, Bosch, Saint Cobain, 3M, Celgene.
