The ReCollective Community Partner Booth!

Come visit the folks at the ReCo table this Saturday from 10-12, and receive a free bag collection kit when you sign up with them!

About this DFM Sponsor:

The ReCollective collects hard-to-recyle items (the stuff that can't go in your curbisde bin) that would otherwise be landfill-bound right from your doorstep, and ensure they are reused or recycled in transparent and responsible ways. They can help you eliminate clutter from your home, and they do the leg work for you, so that common household materials make it to a new life, rather than a landfill!

We are grateful for The ReCo's support of the market, and hope that you will stop by to say hi and find out more about their services and earth-care passion!

         ** FARM NEWS:

Sometimes I ask myself, "Why am I continuing to operate the family farm?"... especially this past Sunday evening about dusk with the rain moving in.  I was deep in the woods (one of the pastures w/ woods) and had crossed a creek and ravine on foot.

One of the farm's prized Black Angus bull's (on his side of the fence) had decided he wanted to fight the nicer Black Bull on my side of the fence.   So they got into a huge fight.. destroying several 50' sections of barbed wire fencing along the creek.  Farm Manager Mario, yes, "Super Mario", and I got the "Bad" bull separated from the "Nice" bull ... each back where they belonged with their group of cows.  Luckily, the 2,500 lb. "Bad" bull did not injure anything or anyone.

About dark with limited cell service or light while attempting to repair the fence line, we heard "Mr. Bad" coming towards us through the woods.. wanting to come back for more fighting. That is when I looked him in the eyes and spoke as plain as I could in my southern slang "cow" language ... "you better get out of these woods, stop fighting, and get back to your group of cows xxx." He turned around and never looked back!   Never a dull moment on this farm!  Thank goodness for Mario!

The photo was taken on Monday this week... the greens are coming along nicely in the solar-powered high tunnel.  The December DEEP Freeze really set the vegetables back... Brussel sprouts are coming outside in the field... limited this week.

PECANS... we have about 2 more weeks of supply to sell... already bagged in 1 lb. freezer bags for you to drop in the freezer. They should keep for about a year in the freezer.. buy yours today before they are sold out.

Our farm's Black Angus cattle have recently been 'Certified Global Animal Partner' (GAP Stage #4) and Animal Welfare Certified... with a national certification which included intensive inspections and audits.   Our vegetables are USDA Certified Organic... a piece of mind for both our meat and vegetable customers.

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday. THANK YOU for your continued support of our Century-old, woman owned and operated Family Farm!

Ninth Street Bakery

This Week: Whole Wheat Levain; Country Loaves; Hot Cross Buns

About Ninth Street Bakery: Determined to change the bread landscape, Ninth Street Bakery was founded by two brothers in 1981 fresh from a stint baking at the Tassajara Zen Center with monk Ed Espe Brown. They brought with them recipes for wholegrain goodness and a mind for doing good works in Durham. Known by many for its seeded sliced pan loaves, NSB now has crusty artisan bread products that burst with the flavors of natural levain, and flaky pastries that slow rise to perfection. Helmed by baker Ari Berenbaum
since 2013, NSB sits at Five Points in Durham, an anchor business in an ever-changing city. We have a full service café, as well as a robust wholesale program that covers the Triad from Greensboro to Raleigh, Durham to Chapel Hill and Carrboro. We give back to the community via our Bakery- and donor-supported Durham Neighbors program, an in-house experiment in Universal Basic Income whereby we Cashapp 100+ low-income local families every month $50 which goes to much-needed groceries, utility bills, or diapers. We are psyched to be now an official member of the Durham Farmer’s Market, joining an illustrious crew of artisans and purveyors who are dedicated to local, independent, small business, and Southern gastronomical culture. Lil' Farm

Hello from Lil' Farm. At market this week we will have kale, collards, chard, scallions, napa cabbage, salanova lettuce, red mustard and more.

And...

It’s time to sign up for our 2023 CSA! Join us for a fresh, colorful, nutritious future bounty.

What is a CSA? CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. It is a farming model based on developing a direct relationship between farmers and their community. A weekly box of lovely seasonal veggies ( and strawberries!) is the glorious result. This is an opportunity to support a farmer by purchasing in advance the most seasonal and successful crops available while acknowledging that some crops will not always work out with the endless variables at play. The good news is, we grow so many different things you may never notice our secret failings.

The CSA will run April 12th through July 26th (16 weeks). Like last year, we are offering a Home Delivery option and 2 pick up sites in Durham (West Durham and South Durham). Go to our website to see pricing and learn more- www.lilfarm.com. We would love to have you! Please share the info with anyone who would be interested.

Thank you and take care,

Lily and George

Botanist & Barrel

2023 here we come! Celebrate in style with locally produced natural cider and wine. We'll bring a selection of our favorites from 2022, including our DeFi Traminette Pet Nat Wine with notes of Stone fruit, white flower, apricot, honeysuckle. Fermented with native yeast. Disgorged by hand. An absolutely perfect bubbly bottle for any celebration! Cheers

Botanist & Barrel crafts real southern ciders, sours, and dry fruit wines. We are the South's only natural cidery focused on spontaneous and wild cultures. We craft healthy adult lifestyle beverages for every occasion. We support our local farmers using local sustainably and organically sourced fruits, including blueberries, apples and more from our no spray estate farm. Only tree ripened apples are used in our ciders with a focus on traditional southern heritage cider apples. All of our ciders and wines contain little to no residual sugar and are low calorie. As an experimental winery we have almost no rules with the exceptions being we never fine, filter or pasteurize any of our ciders or wines.

Piedmont Microgreens

Piedmont Microgreens is an indoor farm located just four miles from the farmer's market! We specialize in microgreens, which are the youngest stage of vegetable crops. Microgreens are great because they're beautiful, tasty, and packed with nutrients. We will be bringing the following microgreens to the market: sunflower shoots, pea shoots, nutrition mix, salad mix, a farmer's choice, and a few specialty varieties, like cilantro, dill, and onion! The nutrition mix is a blend of broccoli, cabbage, and kohlrabi microgreens, while the salad mix is a blend of sunflower shoots, buckwheat, and kale microgreens. The farmer's choice will be a revolving blend of what inspires us each week.
