HASP Monthly Program:

Marathon Swimming

TUESDAY, April 30, 2024 | 9:30am

Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts

Few athletic challenges are as daunting as swimming the English Channel; it requires meticulous preparation and is not only about the distance but confronting bitter cold and powerful currents. The same factors are at play in all marathon swims.  Bryan Huffman, accomplished ultra-marathon swimmer and West Michigan local, will be sharing his first hand accounts of swimming the English Channel, the 20 Bridges Swim around Manhattan, and Lake Michigan.  Bryan will give a brief history of channel swimming and its most well known swimmers, discuss the conditions that make swimming the English Channel so difficult, explore other well known swims around the world, and share his own future goals.  Bryan will also speak on his dedication to raising awareness about drowning risks and prevention in our community.

Bryan Huffman is a local ophthalmologist and ultra-marathon swimmer. He grew up in Hudsonville, MI and attended Hudsonville High School. He holds 3 degrees from the University of Michigan and completed 3 post doctorate years at the University of Florida.  Bryan swam competitively in middle and high school. He coached age group swimming and competed in olympic distance triathlons in college. After a 25 year absence from swimming, he decided to get back into the sport to complete his longtime goal of swimming the English Channel. In October of 2022, he successfully swam from England to France. In 2023 he completed the 20 Bridges solo swim around Manhattan Island and attempted to swim across Lake Michigan. In 2024, he is scheduled to attempt crossings of Lake Erie, the Catalina Channel in California, and Loch Lomond in Scotland.

How to Save a Life

Having a friend or family member with a medical emergency can be a scary situation. HASP has teamed up with HEARTSafe Holland to provide a second hands-on first aid and CPR training in the HASP Classroom on WEDNESDAY, MAY 15, at 9:30am. Although attending this event will not result in official CPR certification, learning CPR can train you how to best help others during a cardiac arrest.

Communities that strive to become “heart safe” must meet criteria established by the Citizen CPR Foundation. This event, and others, are designed to save lives and provide the City of Holland with an official recognition as a HEARTSafe Community which demonstrates a commitment to citizen health and safety. Learn more HERE.

Additional topics of discussion include CPR for children, choking hazards, prevention, and treatment, and the use of AED machines. This 2-hour event is free to attend. Space is limited, so register below.

UPDATED MONTHLY PROGRAM DATES

TWO MONTHLY PROGRAM DATES IN APRIL AND SEPTEMBER

We apperciate your flexibility and remind you to watch the weekly "HASP Happenings" and quarterly newsletters for the most up-to-date calendar.
